Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 12/02/11 and Monday, 12/05/11. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE It is that time of the year. It is time for you to submit your favorite Campus Watch entry or entries. We are beginning the process of selecting the Best Of for 2011. ASHBEL SMITH HALL PARKING GARAGE, 201 West 7th Street Public Intoxication: A UT staff member observed a UT student fall while attempting to walk in a straight line. As the staff member approached the student, the staff member noted the student appeared to be intoxicated and contacted the UT Police Department. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noticed several scrapes on her arms and legs. The officers asked the student for her name and date of birth, with a slurred response the student replied, “20-10-90.” When asked what time it was, the student replied, “20-10-90.” The student did not know where she was or how she was getting home. The officer allowed the student to contact a sober friend to take her home. Public Intoxication charges are pending. Occurred on: 12-05-11, at 12:01 AM. PARKING LOT 103, 2100 COMAL Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered the passenger side window of a Chrysler broken out. The officers observed an unsuccessful attempt had been made to remove the stereo system from the dash. Estimated Damage: $250.00. Discovered on: 12-04-11, at 10:51 AM. PARKING LOT 115, 2000 Block Leona Burglary of Motor Vehicle (2 Counts): While investigating an attempted Burglary of Motor Vehicle, officers searched the surrounding areas and discovered two additional vehicles with broken windows. During the investigation, the officers discovered the stereos had been removed from the dashes of both vehicles. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 12-04-11, at 10:51 AM. PETER T FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, 2304 Whitis Ave Criminal Trespass / Assist Outside Agency / Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT male subject was reported to have entered the 1st floor women’s restroom. The subject left the area prior to the arrival of the officers. A short time later the suspect re-entered the building and enter the 2nd floor computer lab. During the investigation, the officers soon discovered the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The officers also learned the subject had a prior written Criminal Trespass Warning for campus. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants as well as Criminal Trespass. The subject was transported to Central Booking and received an additional Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 12-04-11, at 11:27 PM. PRATHER DORMITORY, 305 East 21st Street Deadly Conduct: Officers responded to a fire alarm at the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers detected smoke coming from a 3rd floor room and noted the window was open. Officers located a cardboard box that appeared to have been burned laying on the ground outside the building. UT staff and the UT Police Officers were able to locate the resident. The UT student informed the officers he had started a fire inside the box, doused the fire, and thrown the box outside. Occurred on: 12-04-11, at 9:48 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Really folks, do we need to stress “Don't play with matches and start fires inside your dormitory room.” As everyone knows at times we have joked about the Aggies and the Sooners in the Campus Watch, today turnabout is fair play. University of Texas has produced great doctors, nurses, CEOs, CFOs, scientists, and others that have changes the world. Pyromaniacs were not listed. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Theft: A green backpack containing a silver Apple laptop computer was left unattended inside a 2nd floor classroom. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim was engaged in a telephone call as he was leaving the area. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 12-02-11, at 1:50 PM. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street Possession of a Controlled Substance: A UT student was found passed out inside a 3rd floor women’s restroom. During the investigation, the officers along with medical personal discovered several “track marks” on the student’s arm as he was actively seizing. The officers soon learned the subject was in possession of Naproxin, Promethazine, Ondansetron Hydrochloride, Loperamide, and Loratadine. The student was transported to a local area hospital. Charges for Possession of a Controlled Substance were filed. Occurred on: 12-13-11, at 11:36 AM. 100 BLOCK West 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a staggering student walking along the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The student handed the officers a current Texas DL that indicated the student was under the legal age of 21. As the officers were issuing the student a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor, the student stated he had an exemption and handed the officer an invalid Florida license that listed the student’s age as 21. The student informed the officers the license was real and was issued to his uncle. The officers acknowledged the Florida license and confiscated it, then continued to issue the court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 12-03-11, at 2:35 AM. 2300 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A female UT student was observed attempting to carry an intoxicated male UT student. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. While interviewing the students, the intoxicated student began providing alcohol enriched compost along the street and sidewalk. Since the female student was sober, the male student was issued a court appearance for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor, and released to his sober friend. Occurred on: 12-03-11, at 2:01 PM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: There are 20 shopping days left till Christmas. This is the time of the year when the thieves are also out shopping. Biggest difference, they are only out to steal. Finals begin next week, textbooks, cellular telephones, and laptop computers are at the top of the thieves shopping list. Take a study break and engrave your driver’s license number on all of your property. Select a page within your textbooks and write your driver’s license number along the spine of the book. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
