Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 12/09/11 and Monday, 12/12/11. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE It is that time of the year. It is time for you to submit your favorite Campus Watch entry or entries. We are beginning the process of selecting the Best Of for 2011. CREEKSIDE RESIDENCE HALL, 2501 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft: A blue Mongoose mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $75.00. Occurred on: 12-08-11, between 12:01 AM and 8:00 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member detected a very strong odor of burning marijuana coming from a 2nd floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers confirmed the odor of marijuana and knocked on the dormitory door. The officers were greeted by the residents. The officers observed a clear plastic baggie that contained a green leafy substance the officers recognized as marijuana and an open bottle of vodka in plain view. One student admitted the marijuana and alcohol belonged to him. He was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 12-11-11, at 12:21 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer responded to a report of an intoxicated student in the Games Room of the dormitory. Upon his arrival, the officer located a student passed out on the couch. The student was stilling wearing the evidence on his shirt that he had experienced an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The student was unresponsive. Austin EMS was notified. A second student began crowding the officer as he was investigating the PI report. The student refused to listen to the officer and became argumentative. The student did inform the officers he and intoxicated student had been to a party. His friend had vomited, then went to sleep, “He was fine.” The officers detected a strong odor on the breath of the argumentative student and learned he was under the age of 21. He was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 12-11-11, at 4:51 AM. MOORE-HILL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: Officers responded to a report of a suspicious subject sitting outside a 4th floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers learned the subject is the former boyfriend of one of the residents inside the room. The subject was escorted from the building by a UT staff member. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and issued him a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 12-11-11, at 4:28 AM. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1900 Red River Theft: A black Apple iPhone, brown leather wallet, $106.00. in cash, several credit cards and personal identification was reported stolen after being left unsecured inside a backpack. During the investigation, the officer learned the backpack had been left unattended on a bleacher while the victim had been warming up for a swim meet. Loss value: $395.00. Occurred on: 12-11-11, between 8:00 AM and 8:45 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: There are 15 shopping days left till Christmas. This is the time of the year when the thieves are also out shopping. Biggest difference, they are only out to steal. Finals begin next week, textbooks, cellular telephones, and laptop computers are at the top of the thieves shopping list. Take a study break and engrave your driver’s license number on all of your property. Select a page within your textbooks and write your driver’s license number along the spine of the book. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. Lost and Found Property Did you lose something on campus? Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
