Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday 12/22/11, and Tuesday 01/03/12. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE In the early morning hours of January 1, 2012, three women were separately attacked in the area of W. 31st and King Street (north of our campus); one of them murdered. The victims in the attack describe the suspect as a black male, aged 30 to 40, approximately six feet tall with a muscular build. He has large dark brown eyes and was last seen wearing a grey hooded jacket over a dark colored t-shirt and blue jeans. Given the proximity of this incident to campus, UTPD is advising faculty, staff, and students (especially those living in the area of the attacks) to be aware their surroundings and immediately report suspicious individuals or activities. APD and UTPD ask that anyone with information about the identity of the suspect in the composite or about any of the three incidents call the Homicide Tip Line at 477-3588 or Crimestoppers at 472-TIPS. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft / Criminal Trespass Warning: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the northeast side of the building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject south of campus. The subject had in his possession four additional bikes. The subject informed the officers he was planning on taking his family on a bike ride and wanted to save some money by not renting bicycles. He intended to return the bicycles once they were done with their bike ride. The subject was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. During the investigation, the officers did locate the subject’s family, the officers confiscated two of the bicycles after family members were able to prove ownership of the others. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Recovered loss value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 12-29-11, at 6:30 PM. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft / Evading Arrest / Criminal Trespass / Unlawful Use of Criminal Instrument: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the northeast portion of the building. During the investigation, the officers located the bicycle attached to the front of a Capital Metro bus. The officers boarded the bus and the bus driver identified the passenger that had placed the bike on the rack. As the non-UT subject was exiting the bus, he decided it was time to leave and took off running from the officer. Additional officers joined the pursuit and began searching the area. They heard dogs barking and located suspect hiding in the next yard. The suspect was taken into custody Theft / Evading Arrest. During a search incidental to his arrest, officer located a pair of bolt cutters and a pair of pliers. The suspect informed the officers those were his tools that he uses to do A/C work with. As the investigation continued, the officers learned the subject had a prior written Criminal Trespass Warning. Additional charges were filed. Occurred on: 12-24-11, at 6:52 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Burglary: A Lincoln welding machine was reported stolen after being left unattended on the ground floor. During the investigation, the officer learned the exterior doors had been secured. Loss value: $4,000.00. Occurred between: 12-27-11 and 12-28-11. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Burglary: A UT Contractor discovered the pad lock securing a construction trailer had been cut and removed. During an inventory of the trailer the contractor discovered a Dewalt generator, 2 Wacker steel saws, Husky chainsaw, 2 sub pumps, chip hammer, and a laser had been stolen after the trailer was secured. Loss value: $2,500.00. Occurred between: 12-22-11 and 12-27-11. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Theft / Unlawful Use of Criminal Instrument: The UT Police Department received information a subject was had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the south side of the building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject, identified as a UT student, placing the mountain bicycle onto a car carrier then leaving the area on another bicycle. The student was taken into custody for the theft. During a search incidental to his arrest, officers located a Ryobi circular saw, bolt cutters, hacksaw, and a set of lock picks in his possession. The student was transported to Central Booking. Recovered loss value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 12-27-11, at 6:35 PM. SID RICHARDSON HALL, 2300 Red River Graffiti: A UT Police Officer discovered words, numbers and the signature of the inspiring artist inside a lower level secured room. Estimated repair: $50.00. Discovered on: 12-30-11, at 10:00 AM. UT CHARTER SCHOOL, 2200 East 6th Street Burglary: A UT staff member discovered an unsecured construction gang box had been opened. During an inventory the officer learned 3 Bosch rotary hammers, a Hilti power drill, Ramset nail gun, and 2 Dewalt drills had been stolen from the gang box. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred between: 12-23-11, and 12-26-11. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Disorderly Conduct- Exposure: A UT Police Officer discovered two UT staff members inside a steamed up vehicle. During the investigation, the officer soon discovered both staff members were in the process of checking their Cliffs Notes for Biology. Both staff members were issued court appearance citations for Disorderly Conduct- Exposure. Occurred on: 01-01-12, at 3:34 AM. 400 BLOCK EAST 15th STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a blue Jeep traveling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and asked her if she had been drinking. The driver told the officer, “No.” The driver then informed the officer that her passenger had been. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the non-UT driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 12-30-11, at 1:58 AM. 600 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT staff member discovered a UT student passed out on the east side of OHH. It appeared the student passed out while attempting to perform a bodily function. During the investigation, the officers located the student and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. After waking up, the student informed the officers that he was “home” after being asked if he knew where he was. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. While being transported, the student became very combative and wanted out of the patrol vehicle. Once at Central Booking, the subject was transferred to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 12-28-11, at 2:44 AM. 1900 BLOCK TRINITY AVE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject staggering and stumbling as he attempted to cross a street. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The subject informed the officers he was walking home and pointed in the opposite direction, a direction that would have taken him on 24,901.55 mile journey. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking, a 5 mile journey. Occurred on: 12-25-11, at 1:28 AM. 2400 BLOCK GUAUDALUPE Driving Under the Influence by a Minor / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a gold colored Toyota commit several traffic violations. As the officer drove behind the Toyota, the driver of the vehicle throw a liquid out of the vehicle. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the non-UT driver’s breath. The officer soon learned the driver had emptied a cup containing alcohol prior to being stopped for the traffic violations. The officer also discovered the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for Possession of Marijuana. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding Outside Agency warrant as well as Driving Under the Influence by a Minor / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-01-12, at 1:42 AM. 2400 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN DRIVE. Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a gold colored Volvo traveling the wrong way on two-lane road. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and noted the driver’s thick tongue speech. The driver had a very hard time exiting his vehicle when asked to step out. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-01-12, at 1:23 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 100 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Report, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 9 Burned Out Light Reports, and 7 Unsecured Doors between 12/22/11 and 01/03/12. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need.
