Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 01/06/12 and Monday, 01/09/12. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE In the early morning hours of January 1, 2012, three women were separately attacked in the area of W. 31st and King Street (north of our campus); one of them murdered. The victims in the attack describe the suspect as a black male, aged 30 to 40, approximately six feet tall with a muscular build. He has large dark brown eyes and was last seen wearing a grey hooded jacket over a dark colored t-shirt and blue jeans. Given the proximity of this incident to campus, UTPD is advising faculty, staff, and students (especially those living in the area of the attacks) to be aware their surroundings and immediately report suspicious individuals or activities. APD and UTPD ask that anyone with information about the identity of the suspect in the composite or about any of the three incidents call the Homicide Tip Line at 477-3588 or Crimestoppers at 472-TIPS. JACKSON SCHOOL OF GEOLOGY, 2305 Speedway Graffiti: Words written in blue ink were discovered on the 5th level, inside the west stairwell. Estimated repair: $50.00. Discovered on: 1-09-12, at 1:00 AM. 500 BLOCK EAST MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD. Assist Outside Agency: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject grab two unidentified women as they were crossing a street. The women screamed and quickly left the area. The staff member notified the UT Police Department and provided a description of the suspect. During the investigation, the officers located the suspect walking along the south side of Rec Sports. As the investigation continued, the officers soon discovered the subject had 4 outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants ranging from Assault to Public Intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for the Outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 1-06-12, at 12:43 PM. 1900 BLOCK RED RIVER Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject passed out in a grassy area. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. After waking up, the subject did not know where he was nor what the current date and time were. Due to his intoxication level, the subject was transported to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 1-7-12, at 2:57 AM. 2000 BLOCK SPEEADWAY Possession of Marijuana: A UT Police Officer observed a silver Nissan commit a traffic violation. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of burned marijuana inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, the officer discovered two clear plastic baggies that contained a green leafy substance that the quickly officer recognized as marijuana. The marijuana was confiscated and both the non-UT driver and passenger were issued court appearance citations for Possession of Marijuana and were released at the scene. Occurred on: 1-08-12, at 2:37 AM. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a blue Honda commit several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the UT student driver’s breath. The UT student informed the officer that he had in fact been drinking at several downtown establishments and had between six and seven beers along with two shots while there. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the student. During the testing, the student displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The student was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-08-12, at 2:28 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 23 Alarm Calls, 1 Suspicious Person Reports, 1 EMS Call, 13 Unsecured Door Reports between 01/06/12 and 01/09/12. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
