Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 01/13/11 and Tuesday, 01/17/12. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE In the early morning hours of January 1, 2012, three women were separately attacked in the area of W. 31st and King Street (north of our campus); one of them murdered. The victims in the attack describe the suspect as a black male, aged 30 to 40, approximately six feet tall with a muscular build. He has large dark brown eyes and was last seen wearing a grey hooded jacket over a dark colored t-shirt and blue jeans. Given the proximity of this incident to campus, UTPD is advising faculty, staff, and students (especially those living in the area of the attacks) to be aware their surroundings and immediately report suspicious individuals or activities. APD and UTPD ask that anyone with information about the identity of the suspect in the composite or about any of the three incidents call the Homicide Tip Line at 477-3588 or Crimestoppers at 472-TIPS. Crime Prevention Tips: Do not walk alone at night. Contact SURE WALK at 512-232-WALK (9255). SURE WALK can provide and escort to all student, staff, or faculty member anywhere on campus or a short distance off campus. Ensure you have locked your doors and windows. Even when you are inside. When walking around campus or the City of Austin do not distract yourself by having both ear buds in. Leave one out so you are aware of what is going on around you. When you see a suspicious person or witness suspicious activity take the time to report it. Austin Police Department’s number is 911 / University of Texas number is 911. Use Common Sense and Good Judgment. This is key to any type of safety plan. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A black Apple iPhone was reported stolen after being left unsecured and unattended inside a 1st floor exercise area. During the investigation, the officers learned the victim’s phone had left the campus and were able to obtain a search warrant. During the execution of the warrant, officers were able to locate the stolen cellular telephone. A suspect was identified and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Recovered value: $600.00. Occurred on: 1-13-12, at 3:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many UT students own a Smartphone. Not too many utilize the phone’s ability to track itself with GPS. If your phone is equipped with GPS, turn it on. This is the second stolen cellular telephone stolen where the officers were able to recover it within hours of the reported theft. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft / Fraud: A UT Faculty member discovered his credit card and $100.00 in cash had been removed from his wallet. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had secured his property inside a locked locker located inside a first floor locker room. The theft went undetected until the victim received a telephone call about charges made on his credit card. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 1-13-12, between 12:01 PM and 2:00 PM. MAIN BUILDING, 110 Inner Campus Dr. Suspicious Person: A non-UT subject entered onto the 4th floor asking to speak to the president of the University of Texas. The subject informed the UT Police Officer he wanted to sell his business to the University of Texas and discuss his theory of the universe. After being told he would need to set an appointment the subject left the area. Occurred on: 1-12-12, at 2:20 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21St Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a UT student entered into the dormitory but could not locate her UT ID. The staff member began following proper protocol and issued the student a temporary ID. While issuing the new ID the student began to threaten to do physical harm to the staff member. The staff member detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. During the investigation, the officers located the student by following a trail of evidence the student had provided after having an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The officers located the student lying on the bathroom floor continuing to exhibit signs of a physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The officers learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued her a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. A friend of the student volunteered to stay until the student sobered up. Occurred on: 1-16-12, at 2:41 AM. 100 BLOCK EAST 15th STREET Possession of Marijuana / Driving While License Invalid / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a green Jeep traveling at a high rate of speed. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. While looking for his insurance, the driver and passenger began whispering to each other and made a furtive movement within the vehicle. The officer soon discovered the non-UT driver had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. The driver was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. The officers asked the passenger to step out of the vehicle, the officer then observed a small glass pipe that contained a useable amount of marijuana in the bowl. Officers also discovered the passenger had 4 outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. He was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Additional charges of Possession of Marijuana were filed. Occurred on: 1-15-12, at 3:38 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Suspicious Person: A UT student observed an unknown subject walking towards the bike racks located between CPE and ETC. When the unknown subject realized he was being watched by the student, he changed directions and unsuccessfully attempted to gain entry into ETC. The subject immediately left the area. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 20-30 years of age, 6’-0”, 200 pounds, with facial hair. The subject was last seen wearing dark baggy jeans and a dark t-shirt. Occurred on: 1-17-12, at 5:26 AM. 200 BLOCK INNER CAMPUS DRIVE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student sleeping on a bench next to the Main Building. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor once the officer learned the student was under the legal age of 21. Occurred on: 1-17-12, at 4:50 AM. 800 BLOCK WEST MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD. Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject stopped a UT Police Officer and informed the officer his passenger was passed out and could not provide directions to her home. During the investigation, the officers located a passed out non-UT subject and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on her breath. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-15-12, at 1:30 AM. 2200 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a Toyota fail to stop at a designated spot. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the non-UT driver’s breath. With slurred speech the driver attempted to answer the officer’s questions. When asked how much she had drank, the driver did not know since she had been drinking straight out of the bottle, and the bottle was not quite empty. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-16-12, at 11:21 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 73 Alarm Calls, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 2 Burned Out Light Reports, 21 Unsecured Door Reports between 01/13/12 and 01/17/12. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
