Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 01/26/12 and Friday, 1/27/12. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE As reported by the Austin Police Department. Parents, please view the following link. http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/blotter/entries/2012/01/26/police_man_who_committed_suici.html?89ashg CORTHERS DORMITORY, 2501 Whitis Ave Public Intoxication: A UT student attempted to gain entry into a dormitory that she was not a resident in. The officers located the student and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The officers also noted other signs of intoxication. During the investigation, when the officers would ask the student a question she would make the “OK” sign. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-27-12, at 3:54 AM. CORTHERS DORMITORY, 2501 Whitis Ave Suspicious Activity: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject with great ambitions of being a horticulturalist had planted a marijuana plant inside the courtyard area of the dormitory. The plant was removed and the investigation is progressing. Discovered on: 1-26-12, at 9:20 AM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A UT Student discovered his yellow Asma mountain bicycle had been stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 1-25-12 and 1-26-12. SANCHEZ BUILDING, 1912 Speedway Theft: A tan leather wallet containing $200.00 in cash, several credit cards and personal identification was reported stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the wallet had been inside a closed purse, under a desk inside an unsecured 3rd floor office. Loss value: $256.00. Occurred between: 1-25-12 and 1-26-12. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Theft: A UT staff member observed a UT student attempting to steal a Principles of Biochemistry textbook from the library. During the investigation, the officer learned the staff member had witnessed the student exiting the library with the textbook inside his backpack. The student had attempted to circumvent the security system and failed. The security system notified the staff member who then stopped the student and recovered the stolen textbook. Recovered value: $150.00. Occurred on: 1-23-12, at 8:15 PM. 100 BLOCK East 21st Street Suspicious Activity: A UT Police Officer responded to a report of a subject singing from the top of a tree. During the investigation the officers located the subject and confirmed he was in-fact singing. The subject came down out of the tree and explained to the officers he found it entertaining to sing from a tree. Occurred on: 1-26-12, at 3:02 PM. 100 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Theft: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had stolen a mountain bicycle that had been secured to the bike rack located on the north side of the PCL Library. During the investigation, the officers located three non-UT subjects with the stolen mountain bicycle in the Fiesta parking lot located on north IH35. All three subjects were taken into custody for the theft. The officers discovered the subjects were in possession of another black colored bicycle. The officers confiscated the property. All three subjects were charged with Theft and transported to Central Booking. Recovered value: $1350.00. The UT Police Department is requesting your assistance. We are attempting to locate the owner of the black bicycle. We have information and believe the suspects had taken the black bicycle from somewhere on campus. For everyone with a bike on campus, if you have not physically seen your bicycle within the last 48 hours, we ask that you check on the status of your property. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer discovered two UT students slumped over on the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officers were able to wake both students up and learned the students had been drinking adult beverages at several local downtown establishments. The officers did detect a moderate odor of alcohol on their breaths and learned both students were under the legal age of 21. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released since they were no longer a danger to themselves. Occurred on: 1-27-12, at 2:28 AM. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A UT Police observed a UT student staggering and stumbling off the curb and being caught by a friend. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the staggering student’s breath and learned both students had been to several local downtown establishments. The officers did not detect any alcohol on the breath of the student with cat like reflexes. During the investigation, the officer issued the intoxicated student a court appearance citation for Public Intoxication and released him to his sober friend. Occurred on: 1-27-12, at 2:05 AM. 2400 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering back and forth in the middle of the Guadalupe. The officers stopped the student and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The officers also noted the student’s eyes were bloodshot and his speech was impaired. The student informed the officers he had been drinking at several downtown establishments along 6th Street and had gotten on the wrong bus to go home. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking, his new home for the night. Occurred on: 1-27-12, at 3:05 AM. Do not walk alone at night. Ensure you have locked your doors and windows. Even when you are inside. When walking around campus or the City of Austin do not distract yourself by having both ear buds in. Leave one out so you are aware of what is going on around you. This includes not talking on your phone. When you see a suspicious person or witness suspicious activity take the time to report it. Austin Police Department’s number is 911 / UTPD’s number is 911. Use Common Sense and Good Judgment. This is key to any type of safety plan. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
