Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 01/27/12 and Monday, 01/30/12. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft: The UT Police Department received information that a UT student had stolen a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the northeast side of the building. During the investigation, the officers located the student in the 2200 Block of Speedway. During the investigation, the student informed the officers he was on his way to swap the mountain bike with another bike he had on campus, but for some reason could not remember where the second bike was. The student was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. Recovered value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 1-27-12, at 10:25 PM. FACILITY SERVICES, 1720 Manor Road Theft: A UT staff member discovered 2 sets of scaffolding had been stolen from an unsecured paint shop. Loss value: $967.00. Occurred between: 1-03-12 and 1-17-12. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject was passed out in the lobby of the dormitory. During the investigation, the officer learned a UT student was attempting to bring her intoxicated friend home to sober up. The officers were able to wake the subject up and learned the non-UT subject was under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming adult beverages. The subject was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was released to the sober friend. Occurred on: 1-28-12, at 3:59 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST DEAN KEETON Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a UT staff member passed out behind the wheel of his Ford truck. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the staff member’s breath. The staff member was asked to step out of the vehicle and a shoeless staff member emerged. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The staff member displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The staff member was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-28-12, at 3:08 AM. 2100 BLOCK GUADALUPE Disorderly Conduct-Fighting: A UT student ran up to two UT Police Officers and explained two subjects were threatening to do bodily harm to him. As the student was talking to the officers, two subjects also ran up to the officers. After separating all three subjects the officers learned the following. The first student had hit a non-UT subject in the face while both were waiting for the bus. The student ran off followed by the non-UT subject and another UT student. As the officers were sorting through the information, the victim refused to file charges. Occurred on: 1-29-12, at 2:54 AM. 2100 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering along Guadalupe as she made way from landmark to landmark, basically any fixed object that allowed her to maintain her balance. The student was being accompanied by an unidentified male subject who the student was struggling to stay away from. The unidentified male left the area when the officer stopped the UT student. The officer learned the unidentified male was the student’s former boyfriend. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication, including evidence the student had experienced a physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The student admitted to having created a personal “Splash Zone” on the E-bus. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. Prior to transporting the student, several of her friends happened to be in the area and saw her in custody. The officer released the student to her sober friends. Occurred on: 1-29-12, at 2:30 AM. 2500 BLOCK GUADALUPE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed three UT students staggering and stumbling while walking along Guadalupe. During the investigation the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on their breaths. The students informed the officers they had been consuming alcohol at a fraternity party. The officers learned all three students were under the legal age of 21. All three were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 1-28-12, at 2:34 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 39 Alarm Calls, 4 Suspicious Activity Report, 4 Suspicious Person Reports, 2 Unsecured Door Reports between 01/27/12 and 01/30/12. Lost and Found Property Did you lose something on campus? Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
