Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 02/01/12 and Thursday, 02/02/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 Red River Public Intoxication / Possession of Marijuana: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject passed out on the pedestrian bridge. After several attempts the officer was able to get the subject to respond. The subject informed the officers he had been to a local downtown establishment where he had two beers and left at closing time. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on his breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. During a search of the subject incidental to his arrest, the officers located a plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance. A substance the officers quickly recognized as marijuana and confiscated. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-2-12, at 3:51 AM. JESTER ACADEMIC CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Graffiti: Words written in black marker were discovered on the wooden barrier located on the first floor. Estimated repair: $50.00. Discovered on: 2-01-12, at 12:36 AM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Criminal Mischief: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had damaged his bicycle seat. Unlike a similar incident in 2005, no beady-eyed, four-legged criminal was seen in the area. Loss value: $30.00. Occurred on: 2-01-12, between 11:30 AM and 2:05 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject that matched the description of a suspicious subject entering into the library. Officers located the subject as he re-entered the lobby. The officers located a very distinctive tattoo on the subject’s neck and confirmed he had been involved three separate incidents during the day. As the investigation continued the officers learned the subject had received several written Criminal Trespass Warnings for various locations on campus. The subject was taken into custody. Prior to being transported to Central Booking, the subject informed the officers he needed medical attention. Austin EMS transported the subject to a local area hospital. Charges for Criminal Trespass were filed. Occurred on: 2-01-12. SANCHEZ BUILDING, 1912 Speedway Suspicious Person: An unknown subject was observed walking around inside the building. When a staff member asked the subject if he needed help, he stated he was looking for the exit. The unknown subject was seen walking around in three separate areas of the building. The unknown subject was later discovered inside PCL. Occurred on: 2-01-12, at 8:25 AM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A non-UT subject discovered the passenger side window of her vehicle had been shattered out. After inventorying her vehicle, the victim discovered her Garmin GPS system had been stolen after being left in plain view on top of the ash tray. Loss value: $100.00. Estimated repair: $300.00. Occurred on: 2-01-12, between 9:30 AM and 3:23 PM. 200 BLOCK EAST 24th STREET Theft / Skateboarding: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student skateboarding on campus. During the investigation, the student asked the officers if he could retrieve his backpack from a near-by tree. The student returned and informed the officer his backpack and its contents were missing. The officer learned a Hurley backpack containing two textbooks and the keys to the student’s vehicle had been left unattended and unsecured while he was skateboarding on campus. It was covenant that the officer was there to quickly take the theft report. Loss value: $90.00. Occurred on: 2-01-12, between 6:35 PM and 6:40 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: A great number of students are of the mindset the University of Texas had lifted its ban on skateboarding on campus. That is not the case. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. Lost and Found Property Did you lose something on campus? Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
