Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 02/03/12 and Monday, 02/06/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. UT PARKING LOT 80, 1900 Red River ST Public Intoxication and Criminal Trespass: A UT Staff Member reported a Non-UT Subject staggering in the parking lot. When questioned by the police, the subject stated he had consumed one quart of beer or vodka, he couldn’t remember. The subject had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person, his clothes were disarranged, and he was slurring his speech. The subject wasn’t able to tell the police officer his location and the subject was swaying back and forth while sitting on a bench. The subject also had three prior criminal trespass warnings. The subject was deemed a danger to himself or others. The subject was taken into custody for public intoxication and criminal trespass. He was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 02-03-12, at 11:10 AM. ROBERTS HALL DORMITORY, 303 East 21st ST False Report to a Peace Officer: A Non-UT Subject reported to police that he had been robbed, assaulted, and threatened with a knife. Upon further investigation, the report was determined to be false. The subject was taken into custody for false report to a peace officer and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 02-03-12, at 8:37 PM. 2500 Robert Dedman DR Wrong Way On One Way Street and Driving While Intoxicated: A Non-UT Subject was observed traveling into oncoming traffic on a divided street. The driver displayed slurred speech and stated he shouldn’t be driving. There was a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath. The subject consented to performing the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. He displayed many clues and was taken into custody for driving while intoxicated. He was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 02-04-12, at 1:45 AM. 200 East Martin Luther King BLVD Public Intoxication: A UT Student was observed staggering and stumbling as he walked down MLK. He nearly fell into some bushes before he was stopped by UT Police. His face and clothing were soiled with “leftovers” and dirt. The subject stated he was aware that he was intoxicated because he had a lot to drink. The subject’s eyes were bloodshot and his speech was mumbled, slurred, and hard to understand. The subject was deemed a danger to himself or others. He was taken into custody for public intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 02-04-12, at 3:22 AM. 2400 Speedway Disregard Stop Sign, Possession of Marijuana (2 Oz or Less), and Possession of Alcoholic Beverage in Motor Vehicle (2): A Non-UT Subject was stopped for running a stop sign. During the stop, the passenger (a UT Student) was acting very nervous. The officer asked the driver for consent to search the vehicle. The driver consented. Two bottles of beer were found wedged between the front passenger seat and the center console. They were both approximately ¾ full. A zip lock bag of Marijuana was found in the glove box. The subjects claimed the beer and Marijuana belonged to a friend. The driver was issued a field release citation for Possession of Marijuana and Possession of an Open Alcoholic Beverage in Motor Vehicle. He received a verbal warning for the disregarded stop sign. The passenger was issued a field release citation for Open Alcoholic Beverage in Motor Vehicle. Occurred on: 02-05-12, at 1:14 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 53 Alarm Calls, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 3 Suspicious Person Reports, 1 Criminal Mischief Report, 3 Criminal Trespass Warning Reports, 1 Medical Call, 1 Assisting Other Agency Call, 1 Welfare Concern Call, 2 Lost and Found Property Reports, 4 Key Assist Calls, and 4 Unsecured Door Reports between 02/03/12 and 02/06/12. Lost and Found Property Did you lose something on campus? Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
