Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 02/15/12 and Friday, 01/17/12. ***** ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE ***** A great number of students are of the mindset the University of Texas had lifted its ban on skateboarding / long boarding / roller skating / rollerblading on campus. That is not the case. For more information on skateboarding / long boarding / roller skating / rollerblading rules visit Parking and Transportation’s website at: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/rules/sec4.html MAIN BUILDING, 110 Inner Campus DR Harassment: A UT Staff Member received a harassing phone call. Occurred on: 02/15/12, at 1:52 PM. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th ST Theft (2): Two UT Students reported their property stolen from a room inside Welch. A wallet and a cell phone were stolen. Loss value of cell phone: $36.00. Occurred on: 02-16-12, between 8:39 AM and 8:54 AM. 2800 Guadalupe ST Theft: A UT Student fell as she was walking north in the 2800 block of Guadalupe ST. She got up and continued walking and then realized she left her backpack where she had fallen. She returned to the area and her backpack, laptop, and her wallet had been stolen. Loss Value: $915.00. Occurred on: 02-14-12. Reported on: 02-16-12. ***Tip of the day – Please try to report crimes or any concerns to law enforcement as soon as possible. This allows law enforcement to be on the lookout for stolen property, suspicious people, and take investigative action sooner. 4400 North Mopac EXPY Driving While Intoxicated: A Non-UT Subject was stopped for numerous traffic violations. As the officer approached the driver, the odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected. The driver stated he had come from a bar and had consumed 3-4 martinis. The driver had complications telling the officer where he lived. His eyes were watery and glassy. The driver consented to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. He showed several clues of intoxication. The driver complained of having a dry mouth and difficulties breathing. He was transported, by EMS, to Brackenridge Hospital. Once cleared by medical personnel, he was taken into custody for driving while intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 02-17-12, at 12:17 AM. 2200 Guadalupe ST Public Intoxication: Three UT Students were observed walking in the 2200 block of Guadalupe ST. Two of the females were helping a third get up out of the elevated flower bed near the stop light. Due to the third female’s level of intoxication, EMS was called to the scene. The intoxicated female was transported to St. David’s Hospital. Occurred on: 02-17-12, at 1:58 AM. 2600 Speedway AVE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT Student attempting to walk up several steps, located at the intersection of 27th Street and Speedway Avenue. The student was swaying, unsure of his steps, and he almost fell. As the officer was speaking to the student, the officer could smell the odor of alcohol on his breath. The student had slurred speech, bloodshot and glassy eyes, and he was swaying while standing. The student’s pants and shirt were soiled with the contents that were formerly in his stomach. He stated he had consumed 5 shots of liquor earlier in the evening. He was taken into custody for public intoxication due to the fact that he was unable to stand or walk, he was unaware of his location, and was unable to safely travel to his place of residence. He was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 02-17-2012, at 2:32 AM. ANNA HISS GYMNASIUM, 2501 Witchita Theft: A UT Student reported someone stole her rain boots while she was teaching a dance class. Loss Value: $60.00. Occurred on: 02-17-12, between 12 PM - 1 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 37 Alarm Calls, 4 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 1 Criminal Trespass Warning Report, 1 False 911 Call, 2 Welfare Concern Reports, and 2 Lost and Found Property Reports between 02/15/12 and 02/17/12. Lost and Found Property Did you lose something on campus? Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
