Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 02/17/12 and Monday, 02/20/12. ***** ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE ***** A great number of students are of the mindset the University of Texas had lifted its ban on skateboarding / long boarding / roller skating / rollerblading on campus. That is not the case. For more information on skateboarding / long boarding / roller skating / rollerblading rules visit Parking and Transportation’s website at: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/rules/sec4.html JOHN HARGIS HALL, 1811 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT Staff member reported a non-UT subject was harassing individuals inside the building. The staff member had requested the subject leave the building due to her behavior. The subject refused. During the investigation the officer located the subject. The subject was very agitated with the officers. She refused to identify herself at first. Once the officers explained why they were there, she complied. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-17-12, at 11:50 AM. MEZES HALL, 154 West 21st Street Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered one of the glass inserts located on an east exterior door broken. During the investigation, the officer discovered an unknown subject had used a concrete ashcan to break the window. Estimated repair: $50.00. Discovered on: 2-19-12, at 8:07 AM. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 North IH 35 Criminal Mischief: A non UT subject discovered the front passenger side window of his Ford truck had been smashed out with an unknown object. During the investigation, the officers learned the owner had inventoried his vehicle and discovered all of his property was still there. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred on: 2-18-12, between 6:15 PM and 9:10 PM. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Theft: A pair of black and white plaid rubber boots were stolen after being left unattended and unsecured during a class. Loss value: $60.00. Occurred on: 2-17-12, between 12:01 PM and 1:00 PM. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street. Theft: A blue Asus laptop computer inside a black computer bag was reported stolen after being left unattended inside a classroom. During the investigation, the officer learned the computer had been left on top of a desk while the student left her seat to talk to her professor. Loss value: $305.00. Occurred on: 2-17-12, at 10:50 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Theft: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the north side of ECJ. The subject then placed the bicycle into the back of an orange colored Chevy and drove away. Officers located the vehicle as well as the suspect. The non-UT subject was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. Recovered value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 2-17-12, at 7:53 AM. 2200 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a green Suzki fail to stop at a stop sign. During the traffic investigation, the officer soon discovered the UT student driver had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for a traffic offense committed on a bicycle. The student was taken into custody for the outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant and transported to Central Booing. Occurred on: 2-19-12, at 2:13 AM. 2500 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication / Evading Arrest: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject navigating through his stationary markers, the sidewalk and curb. The subject looked at the officer, turned and attempted to run away. The officer stopped the subject after catching up to him. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and additional charges for Evading were filed. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-18-12, at 1:16 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 76 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 5 Burned Out Light Reports, 12 Unsecured Door Reports between 02/17/12 and 02/20/12. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. Lost and Found Property Did you lose something on campus? Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
