Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 02/24/12 and Monday, 02/27/12. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Assault: UT Police Officers responded on a report of two UT students fighting on the 6th floor. Austin EMS treated both students at the scene and transported both to local area hospitals for additional treatment. Charges are pending. Occurred on: 2-25-12, at 12:16 PM. MUSIC BUILDING EAST, 2405 Trinity Ave Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student reported a suspicious male inside one of the practice rooms. The subject approached the student and asked her to play a song for him. He then asked the student if she were interested in seeing a “magic trick?” The student left and notified the UTPD. During the investigation, the officers located the subject. The subject stated he was there to practice and had not approached anyone. Later in the interview the subject changed his story. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-26-12, at 1:42 PM. MUSIC BUILDING EAST, 2405 Trinity Ave Public Intoxication / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject was passed out in the lobby area. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and were able to wake him up. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. Due to his intoxication Austin EMS was called to the scene. The subject was transported to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Prior to being transported, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. A summons was issued for the Public Intoxication charge. Occurred on: 2-24-12, at 11:59 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: UT Police Officers responded to a medical call at Jester Dorm. Upon arrival officers discovered a passed out student. During the investigation, the officers learned the student had been to a local downtown establishment and had been consuming adult beverages. The officers learned the student had been handed a drink by a complete stranger. After consuming the drink the student felt “weird.” Austin EMS treated the student at the scene and transported her to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 2-26-12, at 4:20 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Ladies, you have heard this statement from your parents, Never accept drinks from strangers. Now you can see why. This student had friends that realized or suspected something was not right and acted upon their instincts. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered the passenger side window of his vehicle smashed out. During the investigation, the officer learned a Beltronics 940 radar detector had been taken from the center console. Loss value: $30.00. Estimated damage: $350.00. Occurred between: 2-24-12, and 2-15-12. 600 BLOCK COLORADO Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer witnessed a blue Mini Cooper strike a legally parked and unattended vehicle. The UT student driver informed the officer he had not been driving when he lightly touched the vehicle in front of him. The officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The student displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The student was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-25-12, at 1:12 AM. 700 BLOCK COLORADO Assault with Injuries: A UT Police Officer witnessed two non-UT subjects standing in the middle of the street. The suspect was hitting the victim with a closed fist. The officer observed the suspect throw her cellular telephone at the victim. The suspect was taken into custody for Assault with Injuries and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-25-12, at 2:10 AM. 1800 BLOCK RED RIVER Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject staggering and stumbling as she walked along a level sidewalk. The officer witnessed the subject use two well placed poles to help maintain her balance. During the investigation the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject attempted to contact a sober friend, but soon discovered they had been drinking as well. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-25-12, at 1:33 AM. 2100 BLOCK RED RIVER Driving While Intoxicated with a Child / Harassment of a Public Servant: A non-UT subject stopped a UT staff member and informed the staff member his aunt was drunk and had hit a bridge. During the investigation, the officers located a white Toyota with a non-UT subject passed out behind the wheel. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. After getting the non-UT driver to wake up, the officers noted other signs of intoxication, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and unsure balance. The officers administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated with a Child. Once officers placed her into the patrol vehicle, the subject became combative and attempted to kick out a window. The subject then started spitting on the officers as they attempted to restrain her. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Additional charges of Harassing a Public Servant were filed. Occurred on: 2-25-12, at 7:11 PM. 2200 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Theft: A red and black Veloz road bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 2-24-12, between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 52 Alarm Calls, 3 Suspicious Activity Report, 4 Suspicious Person Reports, 2 Medical Calls, 2 Burned Out Light Calls, 10 Unsecured Door Reports between 02/24/12 and 02/27/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
