Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 02/27/12 and Tuesday, 02/28/12. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out in section 22 at the conclusion of an event. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted the subject was confused. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene for alcohol poisoning and transported her to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 2-27-12, at 11:23 PM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Assault with Bodily Injury / Assist Outside Agency: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject fighting with another non-UT subject during an event. During the investigation, the officers located the suspect sitting in his assigned seat watching the concert. The officers learned the altercation occurred when the suspect attempted to light a cigar laced with marijuana during the concert. The victim knocked the cigar to the floor and told the suspect she was not going to get kicked out of the concert because of him. The suspect became irate and pushed the victim to the floor, demanding she find his “blunt.” The suspect was taken into custody for Assault and transported to Central Booking. The officers discovered the suspect had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. Occurred on: 2-27-12, at 10:13 PM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Public Intoxication: A non-UT patron approached a UT Police Officer with a concern that another non-UT subject was very intoxicated. The patron stated the intoxicated subject was obnoxious to the patrons sitting around him. The officers located the subject and discovered he had passed out and were able to escort him out of the seating area. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The officers located a sober friend and released him to the friend after ejecting him from the event. Occurred on: 2-27-12, at 10:33 PM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject overheard a conversation between a UT Police Officer and two non-UT subjects whom had been ejected from the concert for practicing a banned ritual of “puff, puff, than pass.” The non-UT subject began dispensing legal advice to the ejected subjects. When asked if he had a ticket for the event, the subject replied he did not. He was asked to leave since he was interfering with officers. The subject refused, stating he had a right to be there. The officer again asked the subject to leave the area since he was not attending the event. Again he refused. With simple words and a shorter sentence structure, the officer explained, “Leave, or Go to Jail.” After 12 refusals the subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-27-12, at 10:00 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Report, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 2 Medical Calls, 3 Unsecured Door Reports between 02/27/12 and 02//12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
