Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 03/02/12, and Monday, 03/05/12. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Theft: A red Schwinn mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the northeast side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. The officer noted the student had used the lock to secure the front tire of her bicycle to the rack. The tire was still secured to the rack. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 2-28-12 and 3-02-12. BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART, 1900 Speedway Suspicious Activity: Several UT staff and students observed a non-UT subject being knocked from a tree onto the ground. Witnesses reported a second non-UT subject was also knocked out of the same tree by the suspect. As the first victim lay stunned on the ground, the suspect circled the victim, then grabbed and took the victim to another tree. Within minutes of the arrival of the police officers, the suspect returned and grabbed the second victim and flew off with him. The suspect was described as: Brown and white plumage, dark piercing eyes, curved beak, with talons. Occurred on: 3-02-12, at 11:34 AM. BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING BUILDING, 107 West Dean Keeton Burglary: A UT student discovered $125.00 in cash was missing after an unknown subject had entered into a secured 2nd floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned the missing money had been inside a secured lock box that was stored inside a desk drawer. The unknown subject had to break the lock on the cash box in order to remove the money. Loss value: $125.00. Occurred on: 3-03-12, between 10:00 AM and 4:45 PM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT Police Officer discovered two UT students sitting behind a brick wall. The officer observed the students engaged in an age old tradition of “puff, puff, pass.” Lying next to the students, the officer saw a silver grinder with a green leafy substance inside. During the investigation, both students admitted to the officer they had been smoking an illegal substance. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and released. Occurred on: 3-04-12, at 2:38 AM. EAST MALL, 2300 Block Speedway Failure to Identify: A UT Police Officer observed three non-UT subjects skateboarding near the MLK statue. As the officer approached, two of the subjects attempted to leave the area via their skateboards. The third subject was stopped. During the investigation, the subject provided the officers with a false name and date of birth. It was not until the officers had all three subjects together that the officer was able to prove that he had been given a false name and date of birth. The subject was taken into custody for Failure to Identify and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-04-12, at 8:25 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping inside a restricted area of the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers discovered the subject had one outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding warrant and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-04-12, at 6:40 AM. MOORE-HILL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Suspicious Activity: A UT student reported receiving emails from total strangers asking her out on dates. The student learned an unknown subject had used her personal email account to set up an account on a dating website. During the investigation, the officers leaned the student has an active unrestricted social media website on Facebook. Occurred on: 3-02-12, at 4:24 PM. PARKING LOT 80, 1900 Block Red River Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered her Coach purse and its contents had been stolen from her vehicle. Loss value: $60.00. Occurred on: 3-02-12, between 9:30 AM and 3:00 PM. PARLIN HALL, 208 West 21st Street Theft: A faculty member discovered an unknown subject had entered into his 1st floor office and tampered with his computer. Upon closer inspection of his office, the faculty member discovered the ceramic head of a figurine had been removed. Loss value: $5.00. Occurred between: 3-01-12 and 3-03-12. PERRY-CASRANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A bag containing two blouses and several pens was left unsecured and unattended inside a 6th floor women’s restroom. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had placed her property on a shelf inside a stall, than left leaving her property behind. Upon her return, she discovered her property was missing. Loss value: $15.00. Occurred on: 3-02-12, at 1:04 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered the passenger side window of his vehicle smashed out. During the investigation, the student inventoried his vehicle and discovered his radar detector and mount had been stolen from the vehicle. The officer learned the radar detector had been stuck to the windshield. Loss value: $180.00. Estimated damage: $300.00. Occurred between: 3-03-12 and 3-04-12. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT Police Officer discovered the passenger side window of a white Ford truck broken out. During the investigation, the officers learned a Passport radar detector and a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses had been stolen from the vehicle. Loss value: $620.00. Occurred between: 3-02-12 and 3-03-12. 100 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student stumbling, staggering and wobbling as he attempted to make his way back to his dormitory. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned he was coming back from a party. The officer noted other signs of intoxication and was unable to locate a sober friend. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-04-12, at 3:06 AM. 600 BLOCK LAVACA Public Intoxication (2 Counts): UT Police Officers responded to a report of a UT student passed out in the roadway. During the investigation, the officers located the student sitting on the curb, being attended to by another intoxicated subject. The student informed the officers that all she needed to do was to call her ex-boyfriend and he would get her. The ex, according to the student, lives in San Marcos. When told that was not a option, the student then stated she could call her cousin, who lives in San Antonio to come and take her home. The student’s phone, was laying in the street in three pieces. Calling was not an option. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the breaths of both subjects and noted other signs of intoxication. Both were taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-03-12, at 2:00 AM. 1700 BLOCK TRINITY AVE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student passed out on the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and observed other signs of intoxication. When asked if he had been drinking, the student replied, “Yes.” The student informed the officer that he had enough to drink not to be driving. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-03-12, at 3:15 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 93 Alarm Calls, 8 Suspicious Activity Report, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 16 Unsecured Door Reports between 03/02/12 and 03/05/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
