Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 03/24/12, and Monday, 03/26/12. GEOGRAPHY, 210 West 24th Street Public Intoxication: A UT staff member discovered a UT student inside a 3rd floor classroom. The student was laying on top of two tables sleeping. Several staff members had attempted to wake the student with no results. During the investigation, the officers were able to get the student to respond and open his eyes. When asked if he knew where he was, the student stated he was “home.” The officers detected an odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-24-12, at 12:11 AM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out inside an 8th floor dormitory room. The student’s roommate and the on-call RA were unable to wake him after discovering the student had urinated on himself and his belongings. Austin EMS treated the student at the scene and transported him to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Occurred on: 3-24-12, at 9:15 PM. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Ave Assault with Bodily Injury / Interfering with Emergency Telephone / Evading Arrest / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student approached a UT staff member demanding to be let into a restricted area so he could see a friend. The staff member refused the student’s request since he did not live there. The student began showing off his wordsmithing abilities by using four letter words toward the staff member. After being told again he could not enter, the student struck the staff member. The staff member pulled out his cellular telephone to call 9-1-1 when he was attacked again by the student. The student bolted from the area when another staff member arrived. During the investigation, the officers learned the student was attempting to gain access into Kinsolving Dormitory. When the student saw the officers approaching, he jumped onto a skateboard and left the area. The student learned he could outrun the officer on foot, but not in a police vehicle. The student was taken into custody for Assault with Bodily Injury / Interfering with Emergency Telephone / Evading Arrest and transported to Central Booking. Since the student did not live in LLC he was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 2-24-12, at 1:47 AM. MCCOMBS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, 2110 SPEEDWAY Suspicious Person: A UT student reported a non-UT subject entered into a 3rd floor classroom and requested to talk to the students. The subject informed the students she could help them make money, “If she liked them.” After talking to a few of the students, the subject began to sexually harass several of the students inside the classroom. The subject refused to leave the room after being asked several times. Once the subject left the students locked the door. Occurred on: 3-22-12, at 4:45 PM. MOORE-HILL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Theft / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Criminal Trespass Warning: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks. During the investigation, the officers were able to locate the subject, still in possession of the bicycle, several blocks away. The subject was taken into custody for Theft. During a search of the subject, the officer discovered the subject was in possession of a glass tube that contained cocaine residue. The subject was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken by the police, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass warning. Loss / Recovered value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 3-23-12, at 10:39 PM. 27th STREET PARKING GARAGE, 109 West 27th Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer discovered the car alarm of a truck going off. The officer discovered two non-UT subjects in the rear passenger compartment of the vehicle. The subjects informed the officers they were waiting for their friend. The officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the subject’s breaths and learned both were under the legal age of 21. After confirming their story, both were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 3-25-12, at 12:51 AM. 100 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts) / Suspicious Activity: UT Police Officers responded to the Main Mall on a report of several students swinging on the flag pole ropes. During the investigation, the officers located the subjects as they approached Jester Dormitory. The students admitted they had been swinging from the flag pole ropes. The officers detected an odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The officers determined the students were under the legal age to consume alcohol. The students were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released at the scene. Occurred on: 3-25-12, at 4:44 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student kicking and throwing bicycles while walking east along 21st Street. As the officer was parking, the officer observed the student attempting to engage in a fight with an unknown subject. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student began crying when the officer was asking questions. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-24-12, at 3:28 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student attempting to ease the drought conditions in a small area of 21st Street. The student was unaware of the police officer standing behind him as he started to walk away. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student informed the officer he was heading to 30th Street where he lived and that he was only a block away. Due to his confusion and his intoxication level, the student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-25-12, at 3:00 AM. 2300 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Assault / Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was observed harassing a female UT student. The subject grabbed the female student as she pulled away and ran off. During the investigation, the officers recognized the subject as a known offender and stopped him. The officers confirmed the subject had received several prior written Criminal Trespass warnings. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. The officers located the female student and learned the subject had grabbed her as she left Kinsolving. The student informed the officers she wanted to file charges. Additional charges for Assault were filed. Occurred on: 3-25-12, at 10:00 PM. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject stopped a police officer and asked where he was and what direction was 30th Street. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted he was swaying back and forth as he attempted to communicate. After receiving the answer to his questions, the subject again asked the officer what street he was on and where was 30th Street. After several more exchanges, the subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to a different location, Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-24-12, at 2:42 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 65 Alarm Calls, 5 Suspicious Persons reports, 4 Suspicious Activity reports, 5 Medical Calls, 2 Burned Out Light reports, 4 Unsecure door reports between 03/23/12 and 03/26/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
