Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 03/30/12 and 04/02/12. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered sleeping on a bench located on the northeast side of the dormitory. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned he had been to several downtown establishments. The student informed the officer he was walking to his apartment located at 28th Street. When the student stood up, the officer noted the student’s lack of coordination and balance. The student was allowed to call a friend to come and pick him up. Occurred on: 3-31-12, at 3:30 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: An Apple laptop computer with a black leather case was reported stolen from inside the 2nd floor women’s locker room. During the investigation, the officer learned the computer had been left inside an unsecured locker. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 3-20-12, between 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Average Laptop computer: $1,000.00. Gym membership: $103.00 a semester. Price of a lock: $2.95. Unsuccessful thief, Priceless. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out next to the main entrance of the gym. During the investigation, the officer was able to wake the student up and learned the student was “just chilling with friends.” The officer looked around to make sure he was not missing anyone and confirmed the student was in fact alone. The student told the officer he was heading to his dorm that was under the UT Tower. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-31-12, at 1:27 AM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member observed several male students carrying an intoxicated female into the dormitory. The responding officers located the female student alone inside a 9th floor dormitory room. The student was laying in a pool of vomit. Austin EMS transported the student to a local area hospital. During the investigation, the officers located one of the students who had taken the intoxicated student to her room. The officers learned the students had decided to take the intoxicated student home and continue partying. During the interview, the officer detected the odor of alcohol on the breath of the roommate and learned she was under the legal age of 21 and issued her a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 4-01-12, at 12:10 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Decisions, there are plenty that we make in the course of a day. But there are also consequences for making bad decisions. In this case, the consequences could have been deadly. When assuming responsibility for an intoxicated person, you need to stay with them until they are sober. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft / Fraud: A UT student discovered $1,000.00 had been transferred from his bank account to an unknown location in Missouri. During the investigation, the officer learned the student’s password and security questions from another account had been compromised 20 hours before the discovery of the theft. Loss value: $1,000.00. Discovered on: 3-30-12, at 4:39 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Identify Theft is the fastest growing crime. More individuals are shopping or conducting business transactions on-line. This information is put at risk by hackers. Most Identify Theft can be prevented using common sense. Never share your passwords, and create passwords that are hard to break. Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols when creating a password. The more important the information is (personal information, banking information, credit information) the harder your password needs to be. Create your own security questions or additional layers of security within your accounts to make it harder for hacker to breach. When you suspect fraud, report the incident to the police as quickly as possible. Place holds or freeze your accounts as well as your credit. LITTLEFIELD DORMITORY, 201 West Dean Keeton Harassment / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student was informed her ex-boyfriend had shown up to her dormitory unannounced. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had broken off all contact with her ex during Spring Break. Since that time, the student has received a number of text messages, telephone calls and emails. The officer contacted the ex and issued him a Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 3-31-12, at 10:00 PM. PHARMACY BUILDING, 2409 University Ave Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had micturated inside one of the elevators. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of urine. Discovered on 3-30-12, at 1:45 PM. 1900 BLOCK RED RIVER Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject lying on the ground next to a busy intersection. During the investigation, the officers were able wake the subject up. Once awake, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was unaware of his location, time or day. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-31-12, at 8:28 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed staggering then standing in the roadway. The student informed the officer where he was and where he was going. When asked how much he had to drink tonight, the student replied, “Too much.” The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released. Occurred on: 3-31-12, at 2:23 AM. 1900 BLOCK TRINITY AVE Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a grey Mazda traveling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. During the traffic investigation, the officer learned the non-UT driver had several outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody for the warrants and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-31-12, at 11:39 PM. 2100 BLOCK GUADALUPE Evading Arrest / Detention: A UT Police Officer was informed a non-UT subject was pulling on the door handles of several parked vehicles. The responding officers located the subject and attempted to stop him. The subject looked at the officers, then turned and left the area in haste. The subject ran west towards Guadalupe and realized the officer was still hot on his heels. The subject then turned to run back towards campus and saw a second officer running towards him. The subject squared off towards the officers and was taken into custody. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-01-12, at 2:35 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 55 Alarm Calls, 2 False Reports, 2 Suspicious Persons reports, 4 Suspicious Activity reports, 4 Burned Out light reports, 6 Unsecure door reports between 03/30/12 and 04/02/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
