Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 04/10/12 and Wednesday, 04/11/12. CAROTHERS DORMITORY, 2501 Whitis Ave Theft: A black Dell laptop computer was reported stolen after being left unattended under a tree. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had been standing a short distance away working on a film project when her property was stolen. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred on: 4-09-12, between 8:15 PM and 8:30 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The victim informed the officer there was nothing significant about her property that would make it stand out. There are two free programs offered though the University Police Department to dispel this statement. The first program is Make Your Mark. This program provides you the opportunity to engrave your driver’s license or State issued ID number onto your property. The second program is the Free On-Line property registration. Here you can record the make, model, and more importantly the serial number of your property. This makes your property very significant. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A black Apple iPhone was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured next to a bench located on the 3rd floor. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 4-10-12, at 9:45 PM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Theft: A white Apple iPhone was reported stolen after being left unsecured on top of a shelf within the victim’s workspace. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 4-10-12, between 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 510 East 23rd Street Theft: A silver Anest paint gun was reported stolen after being left unsecured inside an unsecured 2nd floor work area. Loss value: $450.00. Occurred between: 3-30-12 and 4-02-12. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 510 East 23rd Street Theft: A Dell laptop computer, leather case, and a dongle were reported stolen from an unsecured 2nd floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned several of the doors leading into this area had been propped open due to work being conducted in the area. Loss value: $950.00. Occurred between: 4-06-12 and 4-09-12. 2300 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Criminal Trespass Warning / Suspicious Person: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject walk up to a UT student and ask the student for money. The officer stopped the subject. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted the subject from campus. Occurred on: 4-10-12, at 10:04 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 12 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity report, 1 Suspicious Person Report, 3 unsecured door reports, between 04/10/12 and 04/11/12. Items with a serial number such as laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, electronics, and bikes are eligible. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
