Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 04/13/12 and Monday, 04/16/12. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd. Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Failure to Identify / Criminal Trespass Warning: Two UT students along with two non-UT subjects were observed attempting to hang a banner from the stadium ramps. During the investigation, the responding officers located three of the subjects inside a restricted and secured area of the stadium. The fourth subject was acting as the look-out. As the investigation continued, one subject, later identified as a UT student, informed the officers that he “Needed more time to identify himself”. When asked again for his name, he repeated his earlier statement. The officer did not need any more time to take the student into custody for Failure to Identify. After being taken into custody the officers soon learned the student was under the legal age of 21. Officers detected alcohol on the student’s breath, so he was charged with Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and transported to Central Booking. The non-UT subjects were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings and escorted from the campus. Occurred on: 4-14-12, at 8:36 AM. LABORATORY THEATER, 303 East 24th Street Aggravated Robbery: A non-UT subject reported two unknown subjects pushed her to the ground causing injury to her shoulder area. The victim stated the subjects took her purse and a bag. Several hours later, an officer located the victim’s property in an alley between JGB and LTH. The unknown subjects were described as: white males of Eastern European descent. Both were last seen wearing brown clothes and masks. Occurred on: 4-14-12, at 5:20 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: Three residents at Jester Dormitory attempted to get a non-resident into the dormitory after hours. During the investigation, the students gave three different stories as to why the non-resident needed to enter the dormitory after hours. During the investigation, the officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the students’ breaths and discovered two of the students were under the legal age of 21. The officers issued the students court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The non-resident was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 4-15-12, at 3:41 AM. MAIN BUILDING, 110 Inner Campus Dr. Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had damaged the lock and hardware to a 3rd floor office. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 4-13-12, at 7:57 AM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Forgery: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had passed a counterfeit $20.00 bill along with a counterfeit $5.00 at one of the eateries inside the Union. Loss value: $25.00. Occurred on: 4-13-12, at 8:31 AM. 100 BLOCK INNER CAMPUS DRIVE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer was informed a UT student was passed out next to the east exterior wall of the Main Building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and discovered his pants were unfastened and he had one boot on and one boot off. After waking up at the officer’s request, the student informed the officer that he knew where he lived, “Friday the 13th”. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-13-12, at 4:46 AM. 300 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Public Intoxication / Possession of a Controlled Substance: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student stumbling while staggering hunched over. The student informed the officers he was trying to make his way back to the Fiji House. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted he was walking west instead of north towards his desired location. The student admitted he had been drinking, but could not remember how much he had consumed. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. During a search of the student, a clear plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance fell out of his front pocket. The officers recognized the substance to be cocaine. The student told the officers, he was holding the cocaine “For a Friend”. The student was transported to Central Booking and additional charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance were filed. Occurred on: 4-14-12, at 4:31 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Public Intoxication / Assault on a Public Servant: A UT student walked up to a vehicle at the intersection of MLK and Red River and struck the vehicle with a metal object. During the investigation, the officer located the student curled up into a ball in the 1900 Block San Jacinto. As the officer approached, the student stood up and approached the patrol vehicle waiving a metal object in his hand. After being ordered to the ground and taken into custody, the metal object was identified as a bottle opener. The student was unaware of his location and was unaware of the current date, Friday the 13th. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted his clothes were soiled. The student was transported to Central Booking for Public Intoxication. Once at Central Booking the student moved his handcuffed hands to the front of his body and struck the officer with a closed fist. Additional charges for Assault on a Public Servant were filed. Occurred on: 4-13-12, at 3:05 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 54 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 EMS Call, 3 Burned Out Light Reports, 17 unsecured door reports, between 04/13/12 and 04/16/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
