Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 04/19/12 and Friday, 04/20/12. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a UT student had been inside the restroom paying homage to the porcelain god. During the investigation, the officers located the student and learned she had been to several downtown establishments over the course of the night. The student stated she had consumed 13 shots of whiskey, but had thrown up most of it. The officers soon learned the student was under the legal age of 21. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The student refused Austin EMS. Occurred on: 4-20-12, at 3:20 AM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Fraud: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had made four unauthorized charges to her credit card. Loss value: $403.36. Discovered on: 4-19-20, at 7:58 PM. PARKING LOT 115, 1600 East 20th Street Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had entered into his vehicle and removed a Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo system. Loss value: $310.00. Occurred on: 4-19-12, between 9:30 AM and 1:55 PM. 100 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Public Intoxication (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer discovered two UT students lying next to each other on the sidewalk. It appeared to the officers, one student had experienced an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The other student was lying in the middle of the “Splash Zone”. During the investigation, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the students’ breaths. Neither student could remember how much alcohol they had consumed, but it was apparently too much. Both students were taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-20-12, at 1:44 AM. 1900 BLOCK RED RIVER Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer was flagged down by a non-UT subject needing assistance to change a tire. While the officers were changing the tire, the non-UT subject began slurring her words. She explained she had just gotten off work as a bartender. After the officers finished, they noticed a stronger odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted she was slurring her words more. The officers learned the subject had consumed several shots of alcohol prior to leaving work. The officers soon discovered the subject was under the legal age of 21. The subject was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The officers contacted a taxi company. Occurred on: 4-20-12, at 3:05 AM. 2100 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject hunched over providing alcohol enriched compost to a small clump of bushes. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath along with the wafting odor of vomit. Due to the effects of the transporting elixir, the subject believed she was downtown Austin with her friends. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. As for her friends, they were never seen. Occurred on: 4-20-12, at 2:55 PM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: The Austin Police Department has asked the following information be passed along to you. From APD: Within the last 2 weeks: Burglary of Residence- - 9 more the last two weeks than in the previous 2 weeks. - Majority of burglaries happening on Friday and Saturday - Majority of victims were intoxicated -One victim stated that almost everyone leaves their doors unlocked, “because they all know each other and everyone has been so friendly.” The University of Texas Police Department responded to 15 Alarm Calls, 1 Suspicious Activity report, 1 Suspicious Person report, 2 unsecured door reports between 04/19/12 and 04/20/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
