Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 04/20/12 and Monday, 04/23/12. GREGORY GYM, 2109 Speedway Theft: A black backpack containing a black cell phone, black leather wallet, credit cards and personal identification was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecure on the bleachers next to the basketball courts. Loss value: $120.00. Occurred on: 4-20-12, between: 3:00 PM and 3:50 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student was denied entry into the dormitory after hours. The student became very upset with the staff member and used his wordsmithing abilities to create a tapestry of four letter words to upset the staff member. During the investigation, the officers located the student and issued him a written Criminal Trespass Warning for the dormitory. The student was referred to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 4-22-12, at 3:05 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT staff member discovered a strong odor of burning marijuana coming from a 1st floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers confirmed the odor and knocked on the door. Both residents inside the room allowed the officers in and granted them permission to search the room. Officers discovered a glass pipe that contained burned marijuana residue inside the bowl. During the search, the officers also located a bottle of rum and several unopened bottles of beer. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Occurred on: 4-21-12, at 11:47 PM. MUSIC RECITAL HALL, 2405 Trinity Ave Theft / Fraud / Possession of a Controlled Substance: A UT student reported her Alto Saxophone, Apple iPad, Tom Tom, several credit cards, personal identification, and a purse stolen after being left unattended and unsecured backstage inside a 2nd floor room. During the investigation, the student stated she was tracking her property via a GPS locator and began providing directions to the responding officers. The vehicle was stopped and the officers observed several of the reported stolen items in plain view. The subjects were identified and taken into custody for the Theft. Officers soon learned one of the subject’s had used one of the stolen credit cards to make several purchases at various locations prior to being stopped. Over the course of the investigation, the officers were able to recover all of the student’s property. During the search, officers discovered one of the suspects was in possession of a controlled substance. Additional charges were filed. Recovered value: $4,731.00. Occurred on: 4-22-12, at 12:20 PM. Crime Prevention: It took team work for the officers to catch these two criminals. One officer directing the other officers to the location while those officers used their skills in apprehending the suspects. It also takes team work within the UT Community to make it harder for a thief to successful. The victim in this case took the time to install tracking software onto her computer. This was the first step. There is a long litany of crime prevention tips that can be written here, Lock your doors when you leave. Never leave your property unattended for any reason. The most important tip, prevention starts with you. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Graffiti: A UT staff member discovered words written in black marker inside a 1st floor men’s restroom. Estimated repair: $100.00. Discovered on: 4-23-12, at 12:28 AM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out on the sidewalk located on the north side of the Union Building. During the investigation, the officers discovered the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants for Assault and Public Intoxication. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-22-12, at 2:35 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST DEAN KEETON Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a female UT student supporting a male UT student as they attempted to walk along the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officers learned the students had been to a concert downtown. When asked for their driver’s licenses, the male student handed the officer his UTID which identified him under one name while telling the officer another name. It was apparent the student still believed he was downtown. The officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the students’ breaths and learned both were under the legal age of 21. Both were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 4-21-12, at 12:57 AM. 1900 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed stumbling and staggering back and forth as he attempted to maintain an up-right position. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. When asked how much he had consumed, the student replied,” Too Much”. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-21-12, at 1:25 AM. 2900 BLOCK DUVAL Public Intoxication: An unknown subject contacted the UT Police Department after witnessing a near collision between an intoxicated subject and a vehicle. During the investigation, the officers located a subject matching the description a few blocks away. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject stated she had been drinking, but could not remember how much she had consumed. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-22-12, at 8:17 PM. 2900 BLOCK GUADALUPE Theft / Evading Arrest / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer was informed a non-UT subject had stolen several items from a local merchant. The officer obtained a description of the suspect and located the suspect changing clothes near CPE. When told to stop, the subject took off running towards ETC. After a short jaunt around the buildings the suspect was taken into custody when he ran into a dead end. The officers soon discovered the suspect had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. The suspect was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the suspect was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 4-20-12, at 5:46 PM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: The Austin Police Department has asked the following information be passed along to you regarding burglaries in the West Campus area. Within the last 2 weeks there have been 9 more burglary of residences than in the previous two weeks. - Majority of burglaries happening on Friday and Saturday. - Majority of victims who were at home at the time of the burglaries were intoxicated. -One victim stated that almost everyone leaves their doors unlocked, “because they all know each other and everyone has been so friendly.” The University of Texas Police Department responded to 61 Alarm Calls, 1 Suspicious Activity report, 1 Suspicious Person report, 15 unsecured door reports between 04/20/12 and 04/23/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
