Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 04/27/12 and Tuesday, 05/01/12. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd Terroristic Threat: A UT staff member approached two other staff members and blocked in their vehicle with her own vehicle. The staff member then confronted the other two staff members and began making threats to harm them. When the responding officers arrived, they saw the suspect attempting to leave the area. During the investigation, the officers learned the suspect had been harassing both staff members at their work and home. While the officers were talking to all of the individuals involved, the suspect began yelling threats at one of the staff member. The suspect was taken into custody for Terroristic Threat and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-30-12, at 4:36 PM. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 Red River Theft: A non-UT subject contacted UT Police Officer and informed the officer his cellular telephone had been stolen from an unsecured office inside Brackenridge Hospital. The victim stated he had tracked his stolen cell phone to Centennial Park. The officers searched the area with negative results. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 4-27-12, at 5:00 PM. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject sleeping in an established campsite located on the south end of the park. During the investigation, the officers learned the subject had four outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 4-30-12, at 1:35 AM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Public Intoxication / Theft: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject sitting in a golf cart located on the east side of the stadium. Upon closer inspection, the staff member discovered the subject also had her iPad in his pocket. The staff member confronted the subject and recovered her iPad before letting him know the cops were on their way. The subject bolted from the area towards Clark Field. The responding officers located the subject and ordered him to stop. The subject looked over his shoulder and continued to run. After a short chase, the subject was stopped and taken into custody. Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The victim declined to file Theft charges. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-27-12, at 9:21 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2109 Speedway Theft: A black Apple iPhone with a black Otter Box was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured on a bench next to the basketball court. Loss value: $290.00. Occurred on: 4-28-12, between 7:00 PM and 7:40 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: What are the chances you would leave $300.00 in cash lying around unattended? Slim to none if I am guessing correctly. So why not take the same precautions with your phone, wallet, laptop, and backpack as you would with your cold hard cash. PARKING LOT 53, 2600 San Jacinto Blvd. Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered the passenger window of a Hyundai broken out. During the investigation, the officer was unable to contact the registered owner of the vehicle. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 5-01-12, at 6:53 AM. PARKING LOT 103, 2100 Comal Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject sleeping in an established campsite located in the northwest portion of the parking lot. During the investigation, the subject stated he knew he was on UT property, and informed the officer that he remembered being arrested for Criminal Trespass. Officers confirmed the subject had received several prior written Criminal Trespass warnings for various areas of campus. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued another Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 4-30-12, at 4:39 AM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Suspicious Person: A UT staff member encountered an unknown subject pulling on office door handles in an attempt to find unsecured offices. The subject quickly informed the staff member he had entered the wrong office. The staff member asked the subject who he was looking for and was given a random name. The subject quickly left the area. The officers searched the area with negative results. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 6’-0”, thin build, early 40’s, and was last seen wearing a black shirt and plaid shorts. Occurred on: 4-27-12, at 5:08 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Kudos to the staff member. She did a great job in using a customer service approach when dealing with this suspicious person. The last thing a thief wants is attention and this staff member gave him more than he bargained for. Once he left the area the staff member notified the police. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave Graffiti: A UT staff member discovered words written in spray paint on the main office door and adjacent wall. Estimated repair: $200.00. Discovered on: 4-30-12, at 2:30 AM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had damaged the ignition switch to an unattended UT vehicle. During the investigation, the officer discovered an unknown tool had been forced into the ignition in an attempt to start the vehicle. Estimated damage: $1,000.00. Discovered on: 4-30-12, at 9:00 AM. 500 BLOCK WEST 28th STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject witnessed a UT student driving a Ford truck strike a light pole in the parking lot of a local business located on Guadalupe. Officers initiated a stop of the vehicle. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver informed the officer he had consumed only one beer and was intending to get food for his friends as well as for himself. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: Occurred on: 4-29-12, at 3:19 AM. 1900 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Theft: A red hybrid Giant bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the EAS building. During the investigation, the officer learned there are two baskets mounted to the front of the bicycle. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 4-30-12, between 8:45 Am and 5:15 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 72 Alarm Calls, 5 Suspicious Activity reports, 2 Suspicious Person reports, 2 EMS calls, 9 unsecured door report between 04/27/12 and 05/0/12. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
