Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 05/04/12 and Monday, 05/07/12. BRACKENRIDGE APARTMENTS, 3350 Lake Austin Blvd. Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed wandering around on the property making the residents feel uncomfortable. During the investigation, the officers located the subject next to a dumpster. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the property. Occurred on: 5-06-12, at 9:22 PM. BRACKENRIDGE HALL DORMITORY, 207 East 21st Street Possession of a Dangerous Drug / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT staff member discovered a male subject hanging out of a second floor window holding onto a bottle of alcohol. The staff member entered onto the second floor and detected a strong odor of burning marijuana and notified the police department. The responding officers verified the same odor in the hallway. The officers knocked on the door and heard the occupants putting things away. Once they opened the door, the student informed the officers they had been sleeping. The officers detected a stronger odor of burned marijuana inside the dormitory room. The officers noticed a large water pipe sitting on the floor next to a bed along with two metal grinders sitting on a desk. These items were confiscated when the officers discovered burned marijuana residue inside the bowl and a green leafy substance inside the grinders. During a search of the dormitory room, the officers discovered a Smoke Buddy, a broken pipe containing marijuana residue, marijuana in several locations, two additional water pipes, two tight vac containers, and 1 Amphetamine Salt pill. One subject was taken into custody for Possession of a Dangerous Drug / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-06-12, at 4:24 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Public Intoxication: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject had fallen. During the investigation, the officer learned the subject had slipped after she had dropped her cup of beer. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject did not know where she was sitting to see the concert, nor could she remember how to contact her friends. While on scene, one of the subject’s friends walked by, he refused to take responsibility for her because he did not want to leave the concert. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-05-12, at 10:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: It all boils down to choices. Among other things, choose your friends carefully. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (4 Counts): A UT student attempted to bring in an unauthorized guest into the dormitory after hours. After being denied access, the student ran past the desk with the authorized student. The on-call RA went to the room of the authorized student and discovered four additional guests inside the room. The staff member also observed a bottle of alcohol sitting on the floor. The staff member identified all of the occupants inside and notified the police department. During the investigation, the officers discovered all of the students had gone beck to their own rooms. The officers began locating the students inside their own rooms. The officers began detecting alcohol on the student’s breath and learned they were all under the legal age of 21. Each student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 5-06-12, at 2:59 AM. 100 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student lying next to the Littlefield Fountain. The officer noted the student had not moved in quite a while. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. Once the student was awake, the student was unaware of his location. He still believed he was on “Old 7th Street.” When asked to stand the student was unable to do so. Austin EMS arrived and treated the student at the scene and transported the student to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Occurred on: 5-06-12, at 12:28 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Theft: A red Ozone mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of Jester after being secured. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between: 4-23-12 and 5-05-12. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer was stopped and informed about a non-UT subject passed out in front of a local business on Guadalupe. During the investigation, the officers located the subject passed out and laying in the middle of a puddle. After waking the subject up, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-07-12, at 1:38 AM. 2300 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN Disorderly Conduct-Fighting: UT Police Officers responded to the north end of the concert area on a report of a fight in progress. During the investigation, the officers observed two male combatants on the ground fighting. After separating both parties, one subject attempted to walk away. Several patrons pointed the subject out to the officers. The officers noted the subject had a cut over his eye and a bloody nose. The officers learned the subject who had walked away had assaulted a female he had been arguing with while standing in line to get a beer. The subject was knocked to the ground by a patron standing in line who had witnessed the assault. The suspect was transported to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 5-5-12, at 9:47 PM. 2300 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN Assault with Injuries: UT Police Officers responded to the south side of the concert area on a reported assault. During the investigation, the officers located both the victim and the suspect. The victim had a bloody nose and wanted the suspect to pay her medical bills. The suspect stated the victim had shoved in front of her. The victim then grabbed the suspect and scratched her. Occurred on: 5-5-12, at 8:45 PM. 2400 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a black Jeep disregard a stop sign. During the traffic investigation, the officer was handed a South Carolina driver’s license by the non-UT driver. The license was not confirmed as a valid license. The officer was then given a passport the officer discovered the subject had a valid Texas driver’s license as well as an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-06-12, at 8:23 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 59 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity reports, 2 Suspicious Person reports, 4 unsecured door reports, between 05/04/12 and 05/07/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
