Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 06/21/12 and Monday, 06/25/12. BRACKENRIDGE APARTMENTS, 3350 Lake Austin Blvd Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT Police Officer discovered nine non-UT subjects swimming in a restricted area. The officers observed several open and closed cans of beer and learned the subjects were under the legal age of 21. The officers also discovered two of the subjects had outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. Both subjects were taken into custody for the outstanding warrants and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the officers issued field release citations for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor and gave all nine subjects Criminal Trespass Warnings for the area. Occurred on: 6-24-12, at 2:25 PM. NORTH END ZONE, 405 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject banging his head against the stadium wall. The subject gave the officers a false name. During the investigation, one of the officers recognized the subject from a previous encounter. The officers confirmed the subject’s name and verified the subject had been given a written Criminal Trespass Warning. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-24-12, at 3:41 PM. ROBERTS DORMITORY, 303 East 21st Street Attempted Sexual Assault: A UT student reported being followed by another UT student. As the student entered into the dormitory, the suspect followed her in. The student stated the suspect grabbed her from behind and attempted to assault her. The student elbowed the suspect then kicked him off. The suspect left the area quickly. The suspect was described as: Asian male, black hair, and wearing a black t-shirt, along with thick rimmed glasses. During the investigation, the suspect’s photo was released to local media which led to the suspect being identified. Charges are pending. Occurred on: 6-24-12, at 1:38 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: The survivor, in this case did a great job in defending herself. The techniques used are some of the same techniques taught in the Rape Aggression Defense classes offered by the UT Police Department. I would encourage everyone to take this course. We offer classes for both male and female students, staff members and faculty. The classes are FREE. Had it not been for the combined efforts of the entire UT community the suspect would not have been identified as quickly as he was. A united community can make a difference. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Mischief / Theft of Service: A UT Police Officer discovered the northeast gate arm had been damaged. After a review of the security camera for the area, the officer observed two male subjects lifting the arm to allow a Chevy vehicle out. The officer was able to obtain the license plate number and is in the process of contacting the registered owner. Charges are pending. Estimated damage: $200.00. Occurred on: 6-25-12, at 12:53 AM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Mischief / Theft of Service: A UT staff member discovered the southeast control arm broken. During a review of the security tape, the officer observed a white Nissan pull up to the control arm and two females exited the vehicle. One female was observed squatting along the curbstone and watering the local vegetation. Both females were then observed pushing the control arm up, then leaving the area in the Nissan. The officer was able to obtain the license plate number. Charges are pending. Estimated damage: $200.00. Occurred on: 6-23-12, at 4:30 AM. 1900 BLOCK RED RIVER Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was seen staggering back and forth between his navigational markers while waving a belt high over his head. The subject saw the officer and decided to leave the area. The officers located the subject again and detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath as well as other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-23-12, at 12:29 AM. 2700 BLOCK GUADALUPE Disorderly Conduct-Fighting: A UT Police Officer observed two non-UT subjects fighting in the parking lot of a local business. The officer separated both combatants and learned the victim had been in the process of releasing a vehicle when the aggressor challenged him. The aggressor was taken into custody for DOC-Fighting and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-23-12, at 12:09 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 37 Alarm Calls, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person reports, 4 Burned Out Light reports, 6 Unsecured Door Reports, between 06/22/12 and 06/25/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
