Report for 06/28/2012

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 06/27/12 and Thursday, 06/28/12. NORTH END ZONE, 405 East 23rd Street Theft: A UT staff member discovered a green and silver Club Car golf cart was missing from its parking space near the concession’s office. Loss value: $10,000.00. Occurred between: 6-26-12 and 6-27-12. 200 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Driving While Intoxicated / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (5 Counts): A UT Police Officer observed a white Ford Mustang without its headlamps on. During the traffic investigation, the officer noted there were seven UT students crammed into the vehicle and no one was wearing a seat belt. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol inside the vehicle’s passenger compartment and on the driver’s breath. The officer noted the driver’s eyes were also bloodshot and watery. The driver informed the officer he had consumed two beers because he was the designated driver for the attendees at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity party. During the investigation, the officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The UT student driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. As the investigation continued, the passengers were removed from the vehicle. The officers detected a moderate to strong odor of alcohol on the breaths of the passengers and learned all of the passengers were under the legal age of 21. The passengers were identified as in-coming freshmen attending orientation. They stated they were attending a party at the Phi Kappa Psi house. Five of the six passengers were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released at the scene. Occurred on: 6-28-12, at 1:05 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: The College Experience; For a number of students this means obtaining a degree, then entering the work force and making a difference in the world. For some the college experience means becoming the life of the party. Over the past three weeks several future UT students have had their first encounter with the University of Texas Police Department. Three students experienced the accommodations afforded to them at Central Booking. All of these students were referred to the Dean of Students and are now starting their college careers off at UT with disciplinary actions taken against them. Not a good start. Last night during one of the freshman orientation presentations, a very good question was asked by an in-coming freshman. What are the ramifications for underage drinking? There are several laws in place dealing with Underage Drinking, Possession of Alcohol by a Minor and Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor are the primary laws we encounter on a regular basis. As a UT student you will get to talk to the Dean of Students. The Dean will mandate you to take an 8 hour Drug and Alcohol class in addition to performing 20 hours of Community Service. Not so bad right. Well you will also get to talk to a real judge. There you will face court fines, court costs, mandatory 8 hour Drug and Alcohol class, 20 hours of Community Service, and lose your driver’s license for 30 days. And for the rest of your life you will have a criminal conviction on your record. Not so bad right. Well folks, these types of offences can affect your chances in obtaining your dream job. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 23 Alarm Calls, between 06/27/12 and 06/28/12. To view a map of the campus visit: Are you a Fan of the University of Texas Police Department?
