Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 06/29/12 and Monday, 07/02/12. GOLDSMITH HALL, 310 Inner Campus Dr. Theft / Assist Outside Agency / Unlawful Use of a Criminal Instrument: The UT Police Department received information that a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the east side of the building. During the investigation, the officers located a subject standing next to the bicycle in the 1800 block of Lavaca. A witness informed the officers the subject had just arrived with the bicycle. The subject was taken into custody for Theft. During a search incidental to his arrest, the officers discovered a pair of bolt cutters and a cut lock inside the subject’s backpack. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the officers learned the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Recovered value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 7-01-12, at 10:28 PM. PARKING LOT 37, 2200 Red River Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject sleeping on the bench next to a bus stop. After being awaken, the subject informed the officers he had not been sleeping, but was in fact looking for his girlfriend. During the investigation, the officer soon discovered the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for Probation Violation. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-01-12, at 5:15 PM. 200 BLOCK EAST MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD. Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject fall to the ground after losing control of his bicycle. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject informed the officer he had run over a small stick in the roadway. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-01-12, at 3:16 AM. 400 BLOCK WEST 21St STREET Failure to Identify: UT Police Officers responded to the bus stop on a report of a subject yelling crude comments to students and others visiting the University of Texas. The officers located the subject as he was walking away from the area. The subject denied making any comments. During the investigation, the officers learned the subject had provided them a false name and date of birth, only after the subject had left the area. Once the subject’s true identity was determined, the officers issued a warrant for his arrest. Occurred on: 6-30-12, at 4:21 PM. 700 BLOCK COLORADO Public Intoxication: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject passed out on the sidewalk next to the Colorado Building. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers he had only consumed 3 beers the entire night and was enjoying his night out in Houston TX.. The officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted his eyes were bloodshot and watery. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-01-12, at 5:08 AM. 1900 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject passed out on the sidewalk next to the roadway. The subject did not respond when a spotlight was shown on him. After being awaken, the subject informed the officer that he had only consumed one beer, but believed the correct time was 7:00 PM. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The officer soon discovered the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for a Parole Violation. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-30-12, at 11:14 AM. 2000 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Theft: A UT student reported a white Mongoose with black rims had been stolen from the bike racks located on the east curb line after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $110.00. Occurred between: 6-29-12 and 6-30-12. 2100 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Theft: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a bicycle from the bike racks next to the PCL Library. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and the bike as he was exiting the south end of Clark Field. The subject informed the officers that he was on campus to retrieve his cousin’s bicycle. He then informed the officers he was forced to cut the lock since his key did not work the lock. The subject was shocked to learn the bicycle did not belong to his cousin, but was the property of the University of Texas Police Department. The subject was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. Loss value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 6-30-12, at 3:12 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject riding his bicycle on the sidewalk. During the traffic investigation, the officer soon learned the subject had several outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants for various traffic violations. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-01-12, at 12:54 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 23 Alarm Calls, 1 Burned Out Light Report, between 06/29/12 and 07/02/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
