Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 07/27/12 and Tuesday, 07/31/12. 100 WEST MARTIN LUTHER KING BOULEVARD Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: An Underage UT Student was found in the parking lot of a local restaurant sitting next to her undigested dinner. She was wearing it as well. She had an acquaintance with her and he was talking to a cab driver. It was determined that she was not a danger to herself or others. The acquaintance had planned to see her home and stay the night. However, she did not want him to see her home. The acquaintance was sent on his way. The officer gave the student a ride to her apartment and she was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on 07-28-12, at 1:13 Am. 2100 SAN JACINTO BOULEVARD Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT Student staggering and stumbling in the roadway. The student was almost hit by a passing car. The officer initiated a pedestrian stop. The student stated he had been drinking alcohol and had too much to drink. His clothing was soiled and his eyes were bloodshot. He was unable to stand or walk without stumbling. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 07-28-12, at 3:00 AM. MANOR ROAD AND INTERSTATE 35 Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a Non-UT Subject stumble and stagger across the I-35 frontage road. The officer initiated a pedestrian stop. The subject’s clothes were disarranged and soiled. He had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and his speech was slurred. The subject was confused on his location and did not know how to get home. He was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 07-28-12, at 3:44 AM. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, 100 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer found a card reader that had been damaged. Repair Cost: $50.00. Occurred between 07-27-12, 5 PM and 07-28-12, 9 AM. BEAUFORD H. JESTER CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A UT Student reported his White Samsung Galaxy cell phone and Black Apple IPod Touch stolen. After eating dinner at Jester Center, he got up to throw his stuff away, leaving his items unattended on the table. When he returned, his items were gone. Loss Value: $300.00. Occurred on 07-28-12, at 7:30 PM. 2400 GUADALUPE STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a Non-UT Subject stumbling down the street. The officer initiated a pedestrian stop. The subject stated he had been drinking alcoholic beverages on 6th Street. His clothes were disarranged and soiled. His belt was undone and his pants were falling down. His speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot. The subject was lost and not sure where he was going. He was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 07-29-12, at 3:25 AM. 700 COLORADO STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer responded to a call of an intoxicated subject lying on the sidewalk. Upon arrival, a Non-UT Subject was lying on the sidewalk, unable to stand on his own. He thought it was 3:30 PM, he did not know where he was, or how to get home. His clothing was soiled from falling down. He was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 07-29-12, at 7:15 PM. RECREATIONAL SPORTS CENTER, 2001 San Jacinto Boulevard Theft: A UT Police Officer observed a UT Contractor carrying items out of the building and throwing them into a bush. Upon further investigation, it was determined the subject was attempting to “borrow” the items. He was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. Property Value: $40.00. Occurred on 07-30-12, at 12:30 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 69 Alarm Calls, 1 Criminal Trespass Warning Report, 1 Lost and Found Property Report, 1 False 911 Call, 1 Assist Other Law Enforcement Agency Call, 2 Key Assist Calls, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Sick/Ill Person Calls, 2 Welfare Reports, and 1 Burned Out Light Report between 07/27/12 and 07/31/12. Items with a serial number such as laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, electronics, and bikes are eligible. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
