Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 08/24/12 and Monday, 08/27/12. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a UT student was passed out inside a 7th floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officer located an intoxicated and drooling student laying on a futon inside the room. The officer learned the student and her roommate had been to a party in the west campus area. Once there, the student had been drink wine from a wine bag until she became intoxicated. Austin EMS treated the student for alcohol poisoning and transported her to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Occurred on: 8-26-12, at 1:32 AM. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 North IH-35 Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer discovered a black Honda with heavy collision damage and both passenger side wheels were flat. The non-UT driver informed the officer he had hit a curb which caused his tires to go flat. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver breath and administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 8-26-12, at 2:24 AM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Suspicious Activity: A UT staff member discovered a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance in the food court area near Wendy’s. The green leafy substance tested positive for marijuana. The marijuana was confiscated . Occurred on: 8-26-12, at 2:35 PM. 300 BLOCK WEST INNER CAMPUS DRIVE. Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed fighting the effects of Earth’s gravity. The student staggered up to a restricted area on the Main Mall and torn down the caution tape being used to keep people out of the area. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The officer asked the student if he had been drinking. The student replied, “Too many.” The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 8-26-12, at 4:00 AM. 300 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Public Intoxication / Failure to Identify / Possession of a Fictitious Driver’s License: A UT student was discovered in a supine position on the steps located on the south side of HRC. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student informed the officer he had been to several downtown establishments but could not remember how much alcohol he had consumed. The student provided the officer with a Texas DL that would later be determined as a counterfeit. After several attempts to correctly identify the student, the student was taken into custody for Failure to Identify/ Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of a Fictitious Driver’s License. Occurred on: 8-26-12, at 1:33 AM. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Suspicious Person: UT Police Officers responded to a report of an unknown subject following two non-UT subjects. During the investigation, the officers leaned the two reporting subjects had been walking towards campus when they realized they were being followed. They ran knowing UT had several emergency call boxes. After activating a call box, they did not see the unknown subject. Officers searched the area with negative results. Occurred on: 8-27-12, at 4:50 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Have a safety plan. In this case, two non-UT subjects knew how to summon help even though they were not affiliated with UT. There are 171 emergency call boxes located on campus. When walking about look for these call boxes and take a minute to see how they work. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 54 Alarm Calls,3 Medical Calls, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 4 Burned Out Light Reports, and 5 Unsecured Door Reports between 08/23/12 and 08/24/12. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
