Report for 08/28/2012

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 08/27/12 and Tuesday, 08/28/12. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Suspicious Person: A UT student reported an unknown subject followed her into the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers learned the unknown subject had been hanging around the exterior doors as the student approached. The subject followed the student into the dormitory and was seen peeking around the corner as the student entered into her room. The responding officers searched the area with negative results. The unknown subject was described as: Hispanic male, with a buzzed hair cut. Subject was last seen wearing a dark shirt and tan cargo pants. Occurred on: 8-27-12, at 7:20 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The student in this case did a great job notifying the police department. When faced with the same circumstances, what would you do? Many individuals have not thought about this situation or what they would do if confronted. The best way to plan for these types of situations is to start asking yourself the “What if” questions. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Suspicious Activity: A UT staff member reported an unknown subject had attempted to purchase a meal with a counterfeit $20.00. The staff member informed the subject the bill was a counterfeit. The subject informed the staff member he had gotten the bill from a family member and left the area. Occurred on: 8-27-12, at 9:32 PM. PARKING LOT 110, 2200 Comal Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT staff member discovered the passenger side window of her vehicle broken out. During the investigation, the officer learned a Cassini suitcase containing clothes, a makeup bag, and a small tablet computer were stolen from the vehicle. Loss value: $1,470.00. Occurred on: 8-27-12, between 9:00 AM and 11:45 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: As we can see, leaving valuables in plain sight makes a very attractive target. PARKING LOT 115, 1600 East 20th Street Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT Police Officer discovered the driver’s side door open on a grey Ford SUV. During the investigation, the officer observed the vehicle’s stereo system was missing. During the investigation, the officer was able to make contact with the owner of the vehicle, but the owner was not able to meet the officer. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 8-27-12, at 6:31 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST DEAN KEETON Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer observed one UT student stagger and stumble as he attempted to cross Dean Keeton. Once across, the student needed the support and a hug from a well placed tree while his friend assisted another UT student across Dean Keeton. Once across, the second drunk student wrapped his arms around the first, who was still hugging the tree. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the breaths of two of the UT students. The third UT student stated they had been attending a party at the Gamma Beta fraternity house where his two friends began consuming alcoholic beverages. After talking to the sober friend, the officer discovered the two intoxicated students were under the legal age of 21. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Both students will now have a date with the Student Judicial Services for some remedial education on how to act while at UT. Occurred on: 8-28-12, at 1:47 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Had it not been for the sober friend, both of these students would have been taken into custody for Public Intoxication. 2100 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer witnessed two UT students running through campus. The student would change the direction of their travel every time they encountered a parked or moving police vehicle. Both students were stopped and the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on their breaths. The students stated they had been drinking at an unknown location off campus. The students were attempting to make their way back to their dormitory (Jester) but kept having to change their direction of travel to avoid the police. The officer learned both of the aspiring pathfinders were under the legal age of 21. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. These students will also be chatting with Student Judicial Services. Occurred on: 8-28-12, at 4:25 AM.
