Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 08/31/12 and Tuesday, 09/04/12. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer was informed a highly intoxicated female was attempting to drive her vehicle out of the parking garage. The officers located the vehicle and the female driver on the 4th level of the garage. The non-UT driver informed the officers she was intending to drive home from the football game, unless they wanted her to find another way home. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking, her home away from home. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 11:10 PM. CREEKSIDE RESIDENCE HALL, 2501 San Jacinto Blvd. Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a female UT student attempting to gain access into the dormitory by pulling on all of the exterior doors. The officer soon discovered the same student having a personal Shakespearian moment, a “To Pee or Not to Pee” moment, while talking on her cellular telephone on the west side of the building. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned she was under the legal age of 21. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 7:30 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STATIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student attempt to walk into the stadium with a suspicious bulge on the side of his leg. During the investigation, the student removed a plastic flask containing an amber colored liquid that smelled of alcohol. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor and ejected from the stadium. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 5:39 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STATIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was discovered sleeping in a grassy area inside the stadium. After several attempts the officers were able to wake the student up. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The officer soon discovered the student was under the legal age of 21 and was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 9:02 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STATIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered leaning back smoking a cigarette and drinking from a flask containing rum. During the investigation, the offices learned the student was intoxicated when they attempted to escort him from the stadium. The student could not maintain his balance. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 10:00 PM. NORTH END ZONE, 405 East 23rd Street Assault: A non-UT subject was celebrating Texas making an interception during the game. When he jumped up to celebrate he bumped into an unknown subject sitting in front of him. That subject turned and with a closed fist, struck the victim. The puncher turned and ran from the area. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 8:16 PM. NORTH END ZONE, 405 East 23rd Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer discovered two UT students inside a restricted area. Both students claimed to be “lost.” The officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on their breaths and learned both were under the legal age of 21. Both students were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and escorted from the stadium. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 8:00 PM. PARKING LOT 37, 600 Clyde Littlefield Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered lying on his back in the middle of the sidewalk. The subject’s shirt and pants were unbuttoned and his boots were off. After being awaken, the subject became combative and argumentative. The subject did inform the officers he had been to his girlfriend’s house, had called a cab to go home and woke up to discover he was on UT property. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 1:10 AM. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 510 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject enter into a restricted area and begin assisting in the load out of a show. The subject refused to leave when asked to. When approached by the officers, the subject became argumentative and refused to answer questions. As the investigation continued, the subject became combative with the officers as they attempted to escort him from the area. The subject was taken into custody and transported to a local area hospital. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 9-02-12, at 10:45 AM. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Graffiti: A UT staff member discovered words written in black marker on a fifth floor door and tile wall. Estimated repair: $100.00. Discovered on: 9-02-12, at 1:00 AM. SAN JACINTO PARKING GARAGE, 2401 San Jacinto blvd Criminal Mischief / Theft: A UT student discovered an unknown person had removed the rear license plate to his 2012 Chevy, as well as damaging the left front quarter panel. During the investigation, the officer learned vehicle had been parked on the 5th level of the garage. Estimated loss: $1,000.00. Discovered on: 9-04-12, at 12:23 AM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: UT Police Officers received information several UT students inside a 4th floor dormitory room were in the process of smoking marijuana. During the investigation, the officers identified three UT students inside the room. Sitting in plain view was vaporizer containing marijuana residue. One student removed a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance from a water bottle. The marijuana and the vaporizer were seized as evidence. The officer issued one student a court appearance citation for Possession of Marijuana. Occurred on: 9-02-12, at 7:59 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member discovered a UT student inside a second floor dormitory room having an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The student did not live in that room. During the investigation, the officers located the student inside a second dorm room conducting an encore command performance. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned the student was under the legal age of 21. As the investigation continued, the officers learned the student had attended an event at the Sigma Phi fraternity house. While at the event he was given 6 to 8 “party cups” of an unknown mixture of alcohol. Austin EMS treated the student at the scene. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 4:04 AM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer discovered a known criminal inside the SSB. The subject was inside a restricted area located on the 1st floor. The subject had received 17 prior written Criminal Trespass Warnings, as well as having been arrested 14 times for Criminal Trespass in a number of buildings on campus. The subject was taken into custody for the 15th time for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 8:30 AM. 100 BLOCK EASR 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a red Chevy commit a traffic violation. During the traffic investigation, the non-UT driver informed the officer she was dropping off two strangers at Roberts Dorm. The officer learned the driver saw two UT students staggering and stumbling as they walked through campus. The officer saw the passenger passed out in the passenger side seat. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol the passenger’s breath and learned she was under the legal age of 21. The passenger was identified as a current UT student and was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-03-12, at 2:15 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (3 Count): A UT Police Officer observed two UT students carrying a third UT student down a flight of stairs. During the investigation, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on their breaths and learned the students were under the legal age of 21. All three were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-02-12, at 2:13 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Theft: A red and white Specialized Rockhopper mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the dormitory after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred between: 9-02-12 and 9-03-12. 2000 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Theft: A UT staff member placed his nylon folding chair and a Kindle reader on top of a brick wall during the football event. A short time later he returned to discover his property stolen. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 9-01-12, between 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM. 2000 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out on the sidewalk. After waking up, the student informed the officer he had only consumed two drinks the entire night, even though the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The student was able to contact a sober friend to come take care of him. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 2:55 AM. 2100 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Public Intoxication: Several officers responded to Jester Dormitory on a report of an intoxicated subject. Officers located the subject lying on bench in front of Gregory Gym after a friend attempted to carry the intoxicated student home. Due to his intoxication level, Austin EMS transported the student to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Occurred on: 9-02-12, at 2:57 AM. 2200 BLOCK RIO GRANDE Public Intoxication: Officers responded to a report of an injured bicyclist. Upon arrival officers located the subject and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject had injured himself after falling off of his bike. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene. The subject refused transport to a local hospital and was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-02-12, at 2:00 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed demonstrating his ability to string together one or two syllable words while yelling at a subject on a bus. During the investigation, the officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted from campus. Occurred on: 8-30-12, at 6:48 PM. 2300 BLOCK TRINITY Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a Toyota traveling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. During the traffic investigation, the officer asked the driver for his license. The officer was handed a credit card. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The non-UT driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 12:07 AM. 2300 BLOCK TRINITY Disregard Police Officer: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject riding his bicycle up to a closed off area. When told he needed to wait for the Longhorn Band to pass, the subject mounted his bicycle and attempted to ride through the closed off area. The officer grabbed the subject by his backpack. The subject was taken into custody for Disregard Police Officer. The subject informed the officer he was wanted to get to the other side of the band so he could see his friend. Occurred on: 9-01-12, at 6:45 PM. 2500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Assist Outside Agency / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject lying awkwardly on a bus stop bench. During the investigation, the subject informed the officer he had been drunk earlier and was waiting. The officer soon discovered the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for Alcohol in the Park. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 9-03-12, at 11:46 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 117 Alarm Calls, 1 Medical Call, 4 Suspicious Person Reports, 5 Suspicious Activity Report, 9 Unsecured Door reports, between 08/31/12 and 09/04/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
