Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 09/20/12 and Tuesday, 09/25/12. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGES The University of Texas Police Department is now accepting applications for the upcoming Citizens Police Academy. For more information contact Captain Don Verett. UT’s Counseling and Mental Health Center Announces Suicide Prevention Week 2012 Suicide is considered to be the second leading cause of death for college students. That’s why the Counseling and Mental Health Center is organizing UT’s annual Suicide Prevention Week (September 24-28). This week is focused on raising awareness about suicide and engaging students, faculty and staff in suicide prevention. All are urged to “Be That One” to recognize when their student or friend is thinking about suicide and connect them with the help they need. Throughout the week, 23 campus departments and organizations are sponsoring seven interactive programs as a call to action to prevent suicide within our campus community. For a full schedule of the week’s events and a complete list of counseling and mental health resources available to students, visit cmhc.utexas.edu ALMTRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Burglary of Habitation: A UT student discovered his wallet containing several credit cards, three gift cards, personal identification and $180.00 in cash was stolen from a third floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officer learned the wallet had been left inside an unsecured room. Loss value: $371.00. Occurred on: 9-23-12 between 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 East Dean Keeton Theft: A black Apple iPhone telephone was reported stolen after being left unattended on top of a work table located on the second floor. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 9-23-12, between 1:45 PM and 1:52 PM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Criminal Trespass / Possession of Marijuana: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping in a restricted area. Officers learned the subject had received a prior written Criminal Trespass Warning and was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass. During a search incidental to his arrest, the officers discovered the subject was in possession of two clear plastic baggies containing marijuana. The marijuana was confiscated and the subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-25-12, at 3:40 AM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Theft: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had removed her wallet, credit cards, personal identification, a black Apple iPhone, and a passport from her unsecured purse. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim was unsure where her property was taken since she had left her purse unsecured and unattended in several areas around the Union and West Mall Buildings. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 9-23-12, between 5:31 PM and 6:30 PM. 100 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Evading Arrest: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering and stumbling behind a retaining wall. When the student saw the marked police vehicle, she tried to run in the opposite direction to no avail. The officer drove around the block and discovered the female student slumped on the ground attempting to belly-crawl under a rail. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned she was coming from the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house. The officer learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The student informed the officer that her big sisters from her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, had taught her to run away from the police so she could avoid getting into trouble. Occurred on: 9-22-12, at 1:21 AM. 100 BLOCK WEST 27th STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out in a grassy area along the north curb line. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and other signs of intoxication. The subject did not know what time it was, where he was, or where he had been. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-24-12, at 12:20 AM. 2100 BLOCK UNIVERSITY Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was encouraging the foundation of a local church to grow by providing it with alcohol enriched water. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had been to several downtown establishments where he had been consuming adult beverages. The officer learned the student was under the legal age of 21. While conducting the investigation, the officer noticed the student was attempting to conceal a normal looking water bottle. Upon closer examination, the officer discovered the bottle contained a liquid less like H2O and more in lines with EtOH. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-21-12, at 2:00 AM. 2200 BLOCK GUADALUPE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed stagger running through traffic along Guadalupe. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had just arrived from downtown where he had consumed several adult beverages. The student was not sure where he was, but he knew he was heading to a “friend’s” house. The student was released to a sober friend after he was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 9-21-12, at 1:25 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 121 Alarm Calls, 6 Suspicious Activity Reports, 10 Burned Out Light Reports, 17 Unsecured Door reports between 09/20/12 and 09/25/12. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. For more information, to check for the next available class time or to register on-line go to: http://www.utexas.edu/police/services/defensive_driving.php RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
