Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 10/04/12 and Tuesday 10/09/12. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 Red River Theft: A large white leather purse containing a red leather wallet, personal identification, several credit cards, and a Social Security card was reported stolen during a tailgate party. During the investigation, the officer learned the property had been placed on top of a concrete retaining wall during the party. Prior to the victim leaving to attend the game, she discovered her property was missing. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 10-06-12, between 4:45 PM and 6:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The real damage will occur when the personal identification cards and the social security card are used together, when the victim’s identify will be stolen. Never carry your Social Security Card. This card should always be left under lock and key. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject attempted to strike another subject in front of a UT staff member working the event. During the investigation, the officers located the suspect and detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The officers noted a number of clues that indicated the subject was intoxicated, namely slurred speech and inability to stand without support. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-06-12, at 9:15 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out inside a bathroom stall inside the women’s restroom. During the investigation, the officers were able to get the student to come out of the stall, but she could barely stand on her own. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned she was under the legal age of 21. The student admitted to the officers she had been consuming adult beverages prior to the start of the game. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released to a sober friend. Occurred on: 10-06-12, at 7:15 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student passed out. After being awakened, the student was very confused and lost as to his location, how he was getting home, and the correct date. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-06-12, at 8:00 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered rocking back and forth in a folding chair attempting to use her cellular telephone. The student was having trouble talking on the phone and sitting in the chair. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and other signs of intoxication. The student became aggressive towards the officers when they asked her simple questions. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication after she was unable to contact a sober friend. Occurred on: 10-06-12, at 7:30 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr Public Intoxication / Misrepresentation of Age by a Minor: A non-UT subject approached an officer working the game and appeared to be lost and confused. When asked if she had been drinking, the subject got all excited and informed the officer that she had. She then reached into her purse and removed a counterfeit Alabama driver’s license and handed it to the officer. The officer recognized the document was counterfeit and took the subject into custody for Public Intoxication and Misrepresentation of Age by a Minor. During the investigation, the subject’s mother arrived and informed the officers that her daughter was a former UT student who was in town for the game. The subject was released to her mother. Occurred on: 10-06-12, at 6:45 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr Theft: A brown and tan Louis Vuitton hand purse containing personal identification, several credit cards and keys was reported stolen from under a seat located in section 32. Witnesses had observed a non-UT subject reach under the seat, grab the purse then leave the area. During the investigation, officers located the victim’s bank cards, personal identification as well as her keys from inside a bathroom trashcan. As the investigation, continued, the officers were unable to locate the purse, however the suspect was identified. Loss value: $800.00. Occurred on: 10-06-12, at 7:06 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Thieves are looking for one thing, an opportunity to commit a crime. It does not matter where they are, if an opportunity presents itself to them, the crime will be committed. With that being said, there are a number of things we can do to make it hard for a thief to be successful. If you do not need your purse or other items, leave them at home. Never leave anything unattended or unsecured. When placing items under a stadium bleacher, pay attention to those that are around you. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed staggering as he attempted to navigate the stairs. During the investigation, the officers learned the student had been drinking but could not locate a sober friend. When asked for his ID the student kept handing the officers several credit cards before finding his ID. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-06-12, at 6:20 PM. WINDSHIP DRAMA, 300 East 23rd Street Theft: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had stolen one of the UT golf carts that had been parked next to the building. Loss value: $5,100.00. Occurred on: 10-06-12, between 3:30 PM and 9:50 PM. 100 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Public Intoxication (2 Counts) / Evading Arrest: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student and a non-UT subject staggering back and forth along the sidewalk. As the subjects were passing by the UTC building, one subject had an over powering urge to begin urinating on the stairs. The UT student noticed the UT Police Officer approaching and took off running towards a dormitory. After being stopped the non-UT subject attempted to make two telephone calls on a credit card. The subject dialed the number then placed the card to his ear. He was a bit taken aback when no one answered. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The non-UT subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported him to Central Booking. Prior to being transported to Central Booking the non-UT identified his friend as a UT student. Additional officers searched for the UT student, but were unable to locate him. Occurred on: 10-06-12, at 1:00 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Criminal Mischief : Officers responded to a report of a non-UT subject yelling and pulling out plants from several landscaping beds. The subject admitted to having removed the plants, but thought the police needed to be doing something other than stopping him. The subject was issued a court appearance citation and released at the scene. Estimated loss: $25.00. Occurred on: 10-07-12, at 12:30 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a white minivan traveling west with its right turn signal activated but not its headlamps. The vehicle also had a very flat front passenger tire. The driver, a UT staff member, gave conflicting statements, she stated she was on her way to pick up her children, her brother, friends and believed it was the 35th of July. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The staff member was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-07-12, at 12:47 AM. 300 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered laying face down in personalized “Splash Zone.” The officer asked the subject several times from his personal identification, each time the subject handed the officer a Taco Bell napkin. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene for alcohol poisoning and transported him to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 10-07-12, at 12:46 AM. 2100 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT Police Officer observed a vehicle traveling without its headlamps turned on when required. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected an odor of alcohol inside the vehicle but not on the driver’s breath. During the investigation, the officer discovered the passengers inside the vehicle had been to several downtown locations where they had consumed several adult beverages. Both passengers were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 10-06-12 at 2:27 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student walking back and forth in the 2300 block San Jacinto as if he were lost. The student would stop, turn around and walk in the direction he had just come from. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The student informed the officer he was heading home to 28th and Salado and pointed in the opposite direction. Due to the student’s intoxication level, the student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-07-12. 2600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student who was providing alcohol enriched compost to the local flora. During the investigation, the officer learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and had been drinking alcohol. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 10-06-12, at 3:31 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 91 Alarm Calls, 4 Suspicious Activity Report, 3 Suspicious Person Report, 6 Unsecured Door reports between 10/04/12 and 10/09/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
