Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday 10/09/12 and Wednesday, 10/10/12. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE Reporting bias incidents to CCRT (Campus Climate Response Team) just became simple http://www.utexas.edu/diversity/campus-culture/campus-climate-response-team/ Or http://www.utexas.edu/diversity/campus-culture/campus-climate-response-team/reporting-buttons.php GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A black Apple iPhone 4S was reported stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the cell phone had been left unattended and unsecured on a bench next to an outlet charging. Hate it when a thief gets a stolen cell phone with a dead battery. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 10-09-12, at 11:10 PM. SANCHEZ BUILDING, 1912 Speedway Suspicious Person: Officers responded to a report of a non-UT subject entering into a 5th floor office. A UT staff member described the subject as being very short in stature and wearing a black mask across his eyes. The staff member quickly left the area after notifying the police department. Responding officers surrounded the area and were able to trap the subject using a 12 foot coat rack and a trashcan. The subject was taken into custody and transported to an isolated location and released back into the wild. Occurred on: 10-11-12, at 6:00 AM. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Theft: A UT student reported her brown leather wallet containing credit cards, personal identification and an Apple IPod Touch were stolen from her closed backpack. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had been required to leave her property unattended and unsecured at the front of the classroom while taking an exam. After completing the exam, the student realized someone had removed her personal property. Loss value: $215.00. Occurred on: 10-10-12, between 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Theft: A blue Marin mountain bicycle was reported stolen after being secured to the bike rack located on the north side of Brackenridge Dormitory with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $610.00. Occurred between 10-09-12 and 10-10-12. 2500 BLOCK SAN JANCITO BLVD Theft: A black, white and red Trek mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of Creekside Dormitory after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $805.00. Occurred on: 10-09-12. 2600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Assist Outside Agency: Officers responded to a report of two subjects breaking into a vehicle. Officers located one subject one subject matching the description given by the reporting person. The subject identified as a UT student, was sweating and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The student informed the officers he had a sweating problem (most folks do when they have done something wrong or illegal.) The student informed the officers he was attending a military themed party at the SAE house. As the investigation continued, the officers discovered the student they had detained, along with 5 other students, had driven to the FIJI house and removed a bench along with a sign without the effective consent of the owners. The students then damaged several sprinkler heads prior to leaving the property. The officers issued the student a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released him to the Austin Police Department. Occurred on: 10-10-12, at 3:15 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 32 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 3 Unsecured Door reports between 10/09/12 and 10/11/12. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
