Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 10/12/12 and Tuesday, 10/16/12. CLARK FIELD, 1900 San Jacinto Blvd. Suspicious Person: Officers responded to a report of a subject running through campus carrying a rifle and wearing a gas mask. An emergency text message was sent out to the entire UT campus community. The subject stated he was simply working out. The subject was transported to UTPD and interviewed then released. An all clear message was sent out. Occurred on: 10-12-12, at 3:46 PM. Twice this semester emergency text messages have been sent out notifying students, staff and faculty members of a problem. In both incidents there have been a number of students stating they did not receive the messages. Upon closer inspection, parents had attempted to sign up for the alerts as well. When that happened, the student’s cell number was knocked out of the system and the parent received the alert. After the 9-14-12 incident, the Texas Exes and the UT Parents Association have texting services as well as Twitter accounts that can be used to pass along information during an event. For those parents that are interested in receiving the emergency alerts, contact the Texas Exes and follow along. https://twitter.com/texasexes www.facebook.com/texasexes COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2110 Speedway Burglary of Building: A UT faculty member discovered an unknown subject had entered into her secured office and removed twenty prescription tablets. During the investigation, the officer learned the prescription bottle with the medication had been stored inside a secured desk drawer. Loss value: $600.00. Occurred between: 10-12-12 and 10-15-12. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A black Apple iPhone was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecure next to the 3rd floor basketball courts. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 10-13-12, between 6:40 PM and 7:00 PM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Possession of Marijuana: Officers responded to a 5th floor dormitory room after receiving several complaints about a strong odor of marijuana coming from the room. During the investigation, the officers located one resident inside the room. The resident admitted to the officers she had been smoking marijuana inside the room and allowed the officers to retrieve her small stash from a desk drawer. The marijuana was confiscated and the student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Marijuana. Occurred on: 10-15-12, at 11:35 AM. MOOREHILL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Public Intoxication (2 Counts): Two UT staff members reported two non-UT subjects were attempting to gain entry into the dormitory. The subject informed the staff members they were residents and demanded to be allowed in. The subjects then refused to show any form of identification to the RAs when asked. The responding officers located the subjects and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The non-UT subject’s informed the officers they had met two female students who lived in the dorm and were in their dorm rooms waiting for them. The officer informed the subjects they needed to leave the area. One subject pulled out his cellular telephone to call someone. The officer noted the battery to the phone was dead, however the subject continued to try to call someone. The second subject appeared to be confused and began yelling at his phone to stop. Both subjects were taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-15-12, at 2:10 AM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was discovered passed out in the hall located on the 4th floor. The responding offices located the student minus his shoes. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted his friends had used magic markers to leave messages on the student’s face, arms and chest. The student could not remember how much alcohol he had consumed. The officers learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued him a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 10-14-12, at 6:11 AM. TOWNS HALL, 7272 East Dean Keeton Burglary of Building: UT Police Officers responded to an alarm at Towns Hall and observed a non-UT subject removing items from a vender cart and loading them into a plastic bag. The subject saw the officers and attempted to walk away. When stopped, the subject insisted he was simply passing through the building. Again the subject attempted to walk away from the officers. The subject was taken into custody for Burglary of Building and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-12-12, at 5:40 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered stumble walking along the sidewalk and the inside lane of traffic. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers he was from out of town and was celebrating his birthday with a number of friends. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted signs of intoxication. The officers did not notice any friends standing by to take care of their friend. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-14-12, at 2:20 AM. 600 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject sitting on a bench. While the officers watching the subject, the subject fell over, face first, onto the concrete sidewalk. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject informed the officers he was attending the ACL concert and lost all of his friends. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-15-12, at 2:35 AM. 800 BLOCK WEST 25th STREET Public Intoxication: A group of students stopped a police officer and reported to a non-UT subject was acting very strange, muttering and was in a delirium like state. Officers responded to the area and located the subject who was frothing at the mouth. The subject fixated his stare at the officer and began running towards him in a zombie like state. Officers were able to take the subject into custody safely and transport him to a local area hospital. A summons was issued to the subject. Occurred on: 10-13-12, at 12:30 AM. 2600 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN Possession of Marijuana: A UT Police Officer observed a vehicle following him without its headlamps turned on. The vehicle passed the officer and the officer initiated a vehicle stop. The driver was identified as a UT student who was very nervous when the officer detected an odor of marijuana inside the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, officers located a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance that tested positive as marijuana. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Marijuana. Occurred on: 10-14-12, at 9:00 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 132 Alarm Calls, 5 Suspicious Activity Reports, 4 Suspicious Person Reports, 8 Unsecured Door reports between 10/12/12 and 10/16/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
