Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 10/18/12 and Tuesday, 10/23/12. AT&T CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Ave Assist Outside Agency / Criminal Trespass Warning: UT Police Officers responded to a disturbance inside the AT&T Conference Center. During the investigation, the officers learned a contract employee had been found in possession of a stolen Apple iPhone. The victim of the theft was confronting the contract employee about the theft and demanding the return of her property. As the investigation continued, the offices soon discovered the contract employee had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant, for Theft. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning after being fired as a contract employee. Occurred on: 10-21-12, at 10:28 AM. BATTLE HALL, 302 Inner Campus Dr. Theft: A blue Specialized mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $620.00. Occurred on: 10-22-12, between 4:15 PM and 9:40 PM. BELO CENTER, 300 West Dean Keeton Theft: A blue SE single speed road bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $215.00. Occurred between: 10-19-12 and 10-22-12. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft: A non-UT subject discovered her black leather wallet containing three credit cards and her foreign driver’s license had been stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the wallet had been left unattended inside an unsecured closet. Loss value: $10.00. Occurred on: 10-20-12, between: 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM. BLANTON DORMITORY, 2500 University Ave Possession of Marijuana / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT staff member discovered a strong odor of burning marijuana coming from a 4th floor dormitory room. Responding officers discovered a big party inside the room. Officers detected a strong odor of burned marijuana inside the room when the door was open, and many open and empty bottles of beer throughout the room. The officers asked the students for if there were any additional drugs inside the room as well as alcohol. The officers were handed a baggie containing a small unused amount of marijuana as well as two bottles of Tennessee Whiskey and Markers Mark. The students were issued court appearance citations for Possession of Marijuana / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 10-23-12, at 1:31 AM. BLANTON DORMITORY, 2500 University Ave Criminal Trespass Warnings (2 Counts) / Assist Outside Agency: UT Police Officers responded to ADH on a report of a subject knocking on doors in an attempt to sell newspapers. The subjects had left the area prior to the arrival of the offices. During the investigation, officers learned the subjects were now at Blanton Dormitory. Officers located the two subjects and learned they were selling newspaper subscriptions for the Austin American Statesman. Officers soon learned the non-UT female had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for Theft. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement taken, both subjects were issued written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 10-19-12, at 6:49 PM. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1500 Red River Possession of Marijuana: UT Police Officers detected the odor of burning marijuana near where they were working. A search of the area revealed a non-UT subject holding a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance. The subject informed the officers he had found some trash and was in the process of getting rid of it. While talking to the officers, the subject attempted to prevent the officers from seeing he was in fact holding a baggie of marijuana. The marijuana was confiscated and the subject was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Marijuana. Occurred on: 10-20-12, at 8:25 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 RAOBERT Dedman Dr Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student approached a UT Police Officer and stated another student sitting in section 36 had just completed creating his own personal “Splash Zone” that would make Shamu proud. The student informed the officer he believed the vomiting student was under the influence of alcohol. Prior to the arrival of the officers, the vomiting student was being treated by Austin EMS. The student informed EMS to the fact he had been drinking prior to the start of the football game. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor once his age was verified. Occurred on: 10-20-12, at 8:25 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 RAOBERT Dedman Dr Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A Police Officer working on of the entry gates observed a UT student attempt to enter into the stadium with a concealed flask. Once stopped, the student handed the officer a counterfeit AZ license. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 10-20-12, at 6:45 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 RAOBERT Dedman Dr Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed climbing over the railing in section 25 / 26, then falling to the ground. The subject got up and walked to the visiting team sideline and acted as if he belonged there. When stopped by the officers, the subject stated he was a member of the visiting team’s equipment crew and he needed to get his pass. The subject was informed that he would have already received his pass if he were allowed on to the field. The subject was identified and escorted off the field and ejected from the stadium. Prior to being released, the subject was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 10-20-12, at 7:00 PM. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 RAOBERT Dedman Dr Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A non-UT subject was discovered sitting on the steps inside section 29 creating a splash zone while the Texas offense was inside the red zone. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted the subject was under the legal age of 21. The officer learned the subject had been consuming shots of tequila prior to the start of the game. The subject was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was ejected from the stadium. Occurred on: 10-20-12, at 9:30 PM. EDGAR A. SMITH BUILDING, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Theft: A men’s white gold U.S. Olympic ring was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured inside a first floor men’s restroom. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had taken the ring off to wash his hands and placed the ring on a counter. The victim returned several hours later to discover his ring was gone. Loss value: $1,500.00. Occurred on: 10-19-12 between 10:15 AM and 1:00 PM. ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILDING, 2501 Speedway Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject inside a restricted 4th floor area. The subject informed the officers how he had been able to obtain a key for the area. The officers were unable to contact the professor assigned to the area to verify the subject’s story. The subject was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 10-20-12, at 2:34 AM. GOLDSMITH HALL, 310 West Inner Campus Dr. Theft: Six UT students discovered an unknown subject(s) had entered into a secured 3rd floor studio and removed 3 laptop computers, several wallets containing credit cards, personal identification, and a small amount of money. During the investigation, a UT faculty member observed two unknown subjects walking through the area. Loss value: $917.00. Occurred on: 10-19-12, between 10:05 AM and 11:00 AM. MUSIC RECTIAL HALL, 2405 Trinity Ave Theft: A yellow gold Texas A&M graduation ring was reported stolen after being left unattended inside a 5th floor men’s restroom. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had removed the ring to wash his hands and left the area. Upon his return his property was gone. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 10-22-12, between 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM. STUDENT ACTIVITY CENTER, 2201 Speedway Criminal Mischief / Burglary of Building / Criminal Trespass: Officers responded to the Gates Dell Computer construction site on a report of a half naked (you pick the half) non-UT subject. The subject was seen falling from the second floor than landing in a hole. The subject had already left the site prior to the officers arriving. While interviewing several witnesses, the officers heard banging coming from the SAC. Officers observed a male using a mallet to break the exterior door and gain entry into the building. The subject matched the above description. Officers followed the subject into the building and discovered the subject had forced his way into a 1st floor office by breaking the door. The subject was located inside the office and taken into custody. Estimated damage: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 10-21-12, at 7:00 AM. WAGGENER HALL, 2210 Speedway Theft: A silver Specialized mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike rack located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 10-22-12, between 9:00 AM and 12:01 PM. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Theft: A white Apple iPhone was reported stolen from a secured backpack. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had placed her phone inside her backpack to take a test inside a 2nd floor classroom. After completing the test, the student discovered her phone had been removed from her backpack. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 10-19-12, between 1:10 PM and 1:50 PM. 100 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Harassment: A UT student reported being harassment by his ex-girlfriend. During the investigation, the officer learned the suspect had called her ex-boyfriend 410 times in a 24 hour period. The victim stated he had seen the suspect running from his apartment after knocking on the door. The officer was able to locate the suspect and learned she had called the victim 410 times because the victim was not answering his phone. Occurred between: 10-21-12 and 10-22-12. 200 BLOCK DEAN KEETON Theft: A black Specialized mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side ETC after being secured with a U-shaped lock. During the investigation, the officer learned the former owner had secured the front tire to the bike rack. The tire was still secured to the bike rack. Loss value: $415.00. Occurred on:10-19-12 between 7:30 PM and 10:30 PM. 200 BLOCK DEAN KEETON Theft: A blue Scott mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of CPE after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $600.00. Occurred on: 10-20-12, between 130 PM and 6:30 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student attempting to stumble walk along the sidewalk and the edge of the road. The student was seen stopping and yelling angry words at no one. During the investigation, the officer stopped the student and detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. When asked why he had been yelling, the student stated he had been involved in an argument with two friends while at a party. When asked where he was going, the student informed the officer he was heading home. He then pointed and told the officer he was going to walk to the end of this road, then turn left. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-19-12, at 3:07 AM. 300 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student attempting to support another UT student that appeared to be wearing the evidence of having had an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. However, she was not wearing it very well. Two additional students were standing by. They informed the officers their friend had way too much to drink. I am sure the officers came to the same conclusion. The intoxicated student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released to two sober friends. Occurred on: 10-19-12, at 2:59 AM. 400 BLOCK EAST 23rd STREET Theft: A non-UT subject discovered his blue bicycle had been stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of the stadium after being secured with a lock. The former owner was not able to describe his property to the officer. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between: 10-20-12, and 10-21-12. 700 BLOCK LAVACA Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a silver Chrysler traveling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. During the traffic investigation, the driver informed the officer she was confused about the street signs. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The driver stated she had been to three different bars where she had between one and two drinks, but not more than four at each bar. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver, the driver displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-21-12, at 3:37 AM. 2100 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Theft: A yellow GMC speed road bike was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. During the investigation, the officer learned the bike had not been properly secured and the U-lock was still attached to the stanchion. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 10-18-12 and 10-20-12. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student leaning against a retaining wall adding alcohol enriched compost to the local flora. Two other students were standing near her for support. During the investigation, the officers learned the students had been to a party in the west campus area. Two of the students were willing to take care and custody of their intoxicated friend until she sobered up. The intoxicated student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released to her sober friends. Occurred on: 10-20-12, at 1:37 AM. 2300 BLOCK INNER CAMPUS DR Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer received a complaint about three intoxicated students near the Turtle Pond. Upon arrival the officer did not have a difficult time locating the three students. One student began making insulting statements towards the police officers and her friends. The student continued to show off her mastery of wordsmithing to a point the officers deemed her a danger to herself as well as to others. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. As for the other two students, they were released since they were not a danger to themselves or to others. Occurred on: 10-20-12, at 5:24 PM. 2700 BLOCK HEMPHILL Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject sitting on a bike looking at the bike racks on the northeast portion of LLB. When the subject saw a marked police vehicle approaching, the subject quickly left the area and ran a stop sign in doing so. During the investigation, the officers were able to stop the subject for the traffic violation. The officers learned the subject was resting and fixing his break cable, even though the subject’s hands never left his handlebars. As the investigation continued, the officer discovered the subject was in possession of a glass pipe that contained marijuana residue as well as a small baggie that contained marijuana. The marijuana and the pipe were confiscated and the subject was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Prior to being released the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 10-20-12, at 10:20 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 117 Alarm Calls, 6 Suspicious Activity Reports, 5 Suspicious Person Reports, 4 Burned Out Light Reports, 3 Unsecured Door reports between 10/18/12 and 10/23/12. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need.
