Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 11/09/12 and Monday, 11/12/12. ANDREWS DORMITORY, 2401 Whitis Ave Theft: A black Diamondback mountain bicycle was reported stolen after being secured to the bike racks located on the south side of the building. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred between 11-08-12 and 11-10-12. AT&T CONFERNECE CENTER, 1900 University Ave Public Intoxication (2 Counts): Two non-UT subjects were reported to be refusing to exit a cab after paying. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breaths and noted other signs of intoxication. Neither subject was able to operate a cellular telephone to call a friend. Neither subject knew where they were or where they were staying. Both subjects were taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-11-12, at 2:52 AM. AT&T CONFERNECE CENTER, 1900 University Ave Assault with Injury: A UT staff member heard yelling and objects being thrown inside a 5th floor hotel room. The staff member knocked on the door and observed a female being restrained as she attempted to open the door to get out of the room. The victim was able to exit the room, but was pushed to the ground by the suspect. Responding officers located the suspect inside the 5th floor room and took the suspect into custody for Assault with Injury. During the investigation, the officers located the victim and noted red marks and other signs of the assault. The victim stated she had been drinking with the suspect. The suspect became angry when she refused to sleep in the same area with him after he had vomited onto the floor. The suspect was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-11-12, at 2:15 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject pulling a wall mounted advertizing box off of the exterior walls of FEC and throwing it to the ground. The subject was then observed walking over to several stanchions and pulled them from the ground. During the investigation, the officers located the subject several blocks away. The subject informed the officers he had been involved in a fight with three unidentified subjects near the Erwin Center. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Mischief and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-09-12, at 10:43 PM. MARY E. GEARING HALL, 200 West 24th Street Theft: A fabric wallet containing $120.00 in cash, personal identification, several credit cards and a savings card was reported stolen after being left inside an unsecured 3rd floor office. Occurred on: 11-08-12 between 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM. NORTH END ZONE, 405 East 23 rd Street Public Intoxication (2 Counts): UT Police Officers responded to section 16 on a report of two intoxicated subjects. Officers located the subjects and attempted to detain them. One non-UT subject became combative and refused to comply with the offices. The second subject was identified as a UT student and she was attempting to interfere with the officers. Both were taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-10-12, at 1:39 PM. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 510 East 23rd Street Theft: A non-UT subject reported her Apple iPhone had been stolen. During the investigation, the officers learned the phone was inside a cab and were able to locate the vehicle. The phone was located and returned to the owner. No charges filed at this time. Recovered value: $300.00. Occurred on: 11-11-12, at 11:00 PM. PICKEL RESEARCH CENTER, 10,100 Burnet Road Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered where two separate section of the perimeter fence had been cut. Estimated repair: $300.00. Discovered on: 11-09-12, at 8:29 AM. SPEEDWAY PARKING GARAGE, 105 East 27th Street Counterfeit: A UT staff member discovered a $10.00 bill that did not feel or look like a normal $10.00 bill. During the investigation, the officer learned the counterfeit bill had been received prior to the start of an event at the PAC. Loss value: $10.00. Occurred on: 11-09-12, between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM. WINSHIP DRAMA BUILDING, 300 East 23rd Street’ Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had damaged a fire pull station by ripping it from the wall. Estimated damage: $520.00. Discovered on: 11-11-12, at 12:41 AM. 100 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered two non-UT subjects passed out at the bus stop located on the north side of PCL. During the investigation, the officer was able to get both subject to wake up and respond to questions. The female subject believed she was in Dallas and all alone. The male subject informed the officer he was still on 6th Street. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breaths and noted other signs of intoxication. Both subjects were taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-10-12, at 3:39 AM. 1800 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject walking two bicycles away from the campus area. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers the bikes were being taken back to the ARCH where he could secure them properly on a bike rack. As the investigation continued, the officers soon learned the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants and was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-09-12, at 8:41 AM. If you are missing a street bike or a BXM style bike please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. 1900 BLOCK UNIVERSITY AVE Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was reported to be yelling and attempting to throw a bicycle at passing vehicles. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. While being transported, the subject passed out and Austin EMS was contacted. The subject was then transported to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 11-10-12, at 7:08 PM. 2000 BLOCK UNIVERSITY AVE Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out on a bus stop bench. During the investigation, the student informed the officer he had consumed one 40 –oz bottle of beer along with several other bottles of beer. The student had informed his friend that he was not going to make it to the football game and sat down. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-10-12, at 12:20 PM. 2300 BLOCK TRINITY Assault with Injury: A non-UT subject reported being assaulted by another non-UT subject who had been kicked off a city bus. During the investigation, the officers learned the suspect had attempted to lay down across several seats in an attempt to sleep. The victim told the suspect she could not sleep and would need to leave the bus. The suspect exited the bus then re-entered the bus and attacked the victim. After attacking the victim, the suspect left the area and went to a different bus stop. The suspect was located and taken into custody for Assault with Injury and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-11-12, at 6:48 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 56 Alarm Calls, 3 Suspicious Activity Report, 4 Suspicious Person Report, 3 Unsecured Door Reports, and 2 Burned Out Light Reports between 11/09/12 and 11/12/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
