Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 11/16/12 and Monday, 11/19/12. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Public Intoxication / Criminal Trespass Warning: UT Staff member reported two non-UT subjects were dancing in the aisle and creating a disturbance. When asked to sit down a third subject became argumentative toward the staff members as well as toward the officers. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject became combative with the officers when they asked him to exit the arena and follow them to the concourse. The subject refused and the officers took the him into custody. His two female companions attempted to interfere with the officers and were stopped and escorted from the building and issued a Criminal Trespass Warning. The intoxicated subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-16-12, at 10:31 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning (4 Counts): Four non-UT subjects were discovered in the front of Gregory Gym attempting to solicit for a private company. All four subjects were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings and escorted from campus. Occurred on: 11-16-12, at 10:02 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Burglary of Residence: A UT student left his room key and a pair of sunglasses out on his desk while he was away for the weekend. Upon his return, he discovered these items missing from his 3rd floor dorm room. Neither of his roommates had seen his property. Loss value: $130.00. Occurred between: 11-16-12 and 11-18-12. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: Officers responded to San Jacinto Residence Hall on a report of burning marijuana inside a 3rd floor dorm room. During the investigation, the officers detected the odor of burned marijuana coming from the room and knocked on the door. Officers identified the two residents and discovered a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance, a bamboo rolling mat, and rolling papers. The marijuana and all of the drug paraphernalia was confiscated. The two UT students were issued court appearance citations for Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Occurred on: 11-19-12, at 1:04 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered standing on the walkway leading onto Clark Field. The officer noted the subject was having a difficult time maintaining his balance and appeared to be intoxicated. During the investigation, the officer learned the subject had been with his friends drinking beer. The subject claimed to have consumed one and a half bottles of beer. The subject was unable to tell the officer where he was going or how he was going to get there. The officer noted several signs of intoxication and took the subject into custody for Public Intoxication. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-19-12, at 3:15 AM. 2000 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Theft: A silver Specialized mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of Jester Dormitory. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had secured his bike’s front tire to the bike rack with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 10-20-12 and 10-27-12. Crime Prevention Tip: Look at the style of your bicycle. Is your bike equipped with “Quick Release?” If so using the tires as a point of contact to secure your bike to the bike rack is not an option. Quick release was designed to allow you to release your tire quickly. It was never designed to enhance any security feature. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 56 Alarm Calls, 4 Suspicious Person Reports, 3 Suspicious Person reports, 3 Burned Out light reports, 7 Unsecured Door Reports between 11/16/12 and 11/19/12. Items with a serial number such as laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, electronics, and bikes are eligible. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
