Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 11/27/12 and Wednesday, 11/28/12. AT&T CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Ave Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject attempting to navigate a straight sidewalk. The subject needed the support of several well placed poles and signs to keep from falling. During the investigation, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject did not know where he was or how he was getting home. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-28-12, at 3:20 AM. CALHOUN HALL, 204 West 21st Street Theft: A black HP laptop computer, computer case, a leather wallet containing personal identification, $20.00 in cash as well as several credit cards were reported stolen from a 1st floor office. During the investigation, the officers learned the office had been left unattended and unsecured for 5 minutes. Loss value: $919.00. Occurred on: 11-27-12, between 6:00 PM and 6:05 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed laying his head down on a table, flailing his arms while verbally accosting other students sitting nearby. During the investigation, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned he was under the legal age of 21. The student informed the officers he had been drinking alcohol with his Kappa Sigma fraternity pledges. The student was issued a court release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 11-28-12, at 1:20 AM. 2200 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered laying face down in a pool of vomit. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student was unsure how he was going to get back to his dormitory, or where he was coming from. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-28-12, at 2:00 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Dear Friends, Happy Holidays! I just love this time of year because business is easy. While you’re scouting out shopping deals, I’m checking off the items on my holiday list! Laptops and GPS units are always in the cars, but from now until Christmas there are also packages to score. Some of you are more clever than others and will place the gifts in the trunk, but if you don’t move your car I still know where to look. Once you’ve retired from shopping and need a break, I will move to the theater parking lot with you. I like to borrow your garage door opener and with the help of your car registration I know exactly where you live and have about 2 hours to rummage through your home. Your home is decorated really quite nicely and l love the tree in the front, so I know exactly where to begin my hunt. If I can’t visit you this weekend, there a few more weeks to spare. I know when you aren’t home, because your tree isn’t lit. Seems with all the packages, a timer wouldn’t be much of an extra expense, but whatever. Happy Holidays!!! SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
