Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 11/28/12 and Thursday, 11/29/12. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member observed a known offender inside the building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject as he was attempting to leave. The officers confirmed the subject had received a prior written Criminal Trespass Warning and took the subject into custody for Criminal Trespass. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-28-12, at 1:36 PM. 1900 BLOCK GUADALUPE Theft / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject entered a business on Guadalupe and approached a uniformed UT Police Officer and asked the officer if he wanted to purchase several UT jerseys for $10.00 each. The officer not wanting to pass up a “good deal” noticed the jerseys still had the store price stickers attached to them and asked the subject for his identification. The officer soon learned the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant and was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. As the investigation continued, the officer located the store where the jerseys had been stolen from. Additional charges for Theft were filed. Recovered value: $140.00. Occurred on: 11-28-12, at 1:00 PM. Stay Out of Jail Tip: Never a good idea to offer to sell stolen property to a uniformed cop. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Possession of Marijuana: A UT Police Officer witnessed a tan Toyota fail to come to a complete stop at the intersection. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected the odor of burned marijuana inside the vehicle. The non-UT driver admitted his “friends” had been smoking inside his vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a clear plastic baggie, containing a green leafy substance that later tested positive as marijuana, inside the glove box. The subject was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Marijuana. Occurred on: 11-29-12, at 2:28 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Dear Friends, Happy Holidays! I just love this time of year because business is easy. While you’re scouting out shopping deals, I’m checking off the items on my holiday list! Laptops and GPS units are always in the cars, but from now until Christmas there are also packages to score. Some of you are more clever than others and will place the gifts in the trunk, but if you don’t move your car I still know where to look. Once you’ve retired from shopping and need a break, I will move to the theater parking lot with you. I like to borrow your garage door opener and with the help of your car registration I know exactly where you live and have about 2 hours to rummage through your home. Your home is decorated really quite nicely and l love the tree in the front, so I know exactly where to begin my hunt. If I can’t visit you this weekend, there a few more weeks to spare. I know when you aren’t home, because your tree isn’t lit. Seems with all the packages, a timer wouldn’t be much of an extra expense, but whatever. Happy Holidays!!! SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
