Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 11/30/12 and Tuesday, 12/04/12. *** Please come out and support the Friends of Orange Santa Sausage Sale: Tomorrow - Wednesday, December 5th 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. 2200-2300 Speedway $2 per wrap, $1 per drink Proceeds are used to raise money for children's bicycles to be given as Orange Santa gifts. PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION KIOSK, 200 West 21st Street Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member reported damage to the kiosk on 21st Street. Estimated cost to repair: $100.00. Reported on: 11-29-12, at 9:01AM. JESTER DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: UT Police Officers responded to a welfare concern call regarding an emotional and naked UT Student running around one of the hall floors. The student had taken various drugs. He was found to be a danger to himself and/or others. EMS transported him to the hospital. A summons was issued for Public Intoxication. Occurred on: 12-01-12, at 12:06 AM. 300 Block West 21st Street Public Intoxication: UT Police Officers responded to a welfare concern call regarding a UT Student passed out on a Capital Metro bus. The student was intoxicated to the point of not being able to take care of himself. He was arrested for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 12-01-12, at 3:17 AM. 2400 Guadalupe Street Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor, Possession of Alcoholic Beverage in a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Marijuana (2oz or less), More than One Valid DL in Possession, and Disregard Official Traffic Control Device: A UT Police Officer witnessed a blue BMW disregard a No Left Turn sign. The officer initiated a traffic stop. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected the odor of burned marijuana inside the vehicle. There were 3 Non-UT Subjects in the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered a pill bottle, containing a green leafy substance that later tested positive as marijuana, in the passenger door. A half full can of cold beer was in the seat pocket behind the driver’s seat. The front passenger stated the marijuana was his. There was an odor of alcohol coming from the 20 year old driver’s breath. He stated he had been drinking beer and smoking marijuana earlier in the night. The subjects were issued Field Release Citations, the vehicle was towed, and they contacted a family member to pick them up. Occurred on 12-01-12, at 2:34 AM. 1900 San Jacinto Boulevard Possession of Marijuana (2oz or less), Public Intoxication, and Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT Police Officer observed a Non-UT Subject passed out on the steps leading to the Texas Swim Center. The subject was unresponsive when the officer called out to him. Eventually, the subject responded. The subject had to use the wall to hold himself up, his eyes were bloodshot, and he had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath. He was deemed a danger to himself and/or others. The officer observed a small plastic bag in the subject’s right hand. The officer asked about it and the subject threw it on the ground. The bag contained a green leafy substance that later tested positive as marijuana. The subject was arrested for Possession of Marijuana (2oz or less), Public Intoxication, and was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning. He was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 12-01-12, at 3:42 AM. JESTER DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: UT Police officers responded to a welfare concern call regarding a 19 year old UT Student passed out, on the floor, in a women’s restroom. During the call, it was discovered the UT Student is a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and they were having a party with the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Recess Arcade Bar. She stated she drank approximately 12 mixed vodka drinks while at the bar. She was also in possession of a fictitious Louisiana Driver License. EMS transported her to the hospital. A summons was issued for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on 12-01-12, at 4:10 AM. BIKE RACK, 110 Inner Campus Drive Theft: A UT Student reported his brown over tan mountain bike and cable lock stolen from the bike rack on the west side of the Main Building. Unknown brand name or value. Occurred on 12-01-12, between 12:00 PM and 3:45 PM. UNIVERSITY POLICE BUILDING, 2201 Robert Dedman Drive Terroristic Threat: A Non-UT Subject was banging on the loading dock door to the University Police Department. He was sweating and appeared to be in distress. A plain clothes UT Detective opened the back door to meet with the subject. He immediately started yelling out “Does a cop have the right to cuss at you?” The detective told him it was not normal behavior but it depended on the situation. The subject kept yelling out that question and then said he was going to kill the next cop he saw. The detective tried to deescalate the situation by asking the subject to sit down on a bench. The subject kept repeating that he was going to kill the next cop he saw. He was upset with an officer from the Austin Police Department for cussing him out at a park. He began to walk down the stairs. The plain clothes detective went back into the building and requested uniformed officers to respond. Uniformed officers arrived and stopped the subject. The subject told a supervisor, on scene, that he would take him out. The subject was taken into custody for Terroristic Threat – Against Public Servant and transported to Central Booking. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street Theft: A Non-UT Subject reported her white Apple i-Phone 4s, 16g stolen. She was studying and left her cell phone in her chair while she went to the restroom. When she returned, her phone was gone. Loss Value: $265. Occurred on 12-01-12, between 1:43 PM and 1:48 PM. 2900 Block Guadalupe Street Public Intoxication and Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a Non-UT Subject attempting to cross the roadway. The officer initiated a pedestrian stop. The subject’s eyes were red and glassy. His speech was slurred. His clothes were soiled and wet. He seemed confused about where he was coming from and where he was going. After a warrant check, it was determined that he had 3 municipal warrants. He was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and the 3 warrants. He was transferred to Central Booking. Occurred on 12-01-12, at 8:34 PM. WAGGENER HALL, 2210 Speedway Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer found a UT Student sleeping in a doorway to Waggener Hall. He was using a floor matt as a blanket. The student smelled of alcohol, his appearance was disarranged, and his eyes were glassy. He did not know his location and could not give officers his home address. A responsible person could not be found to take custody of him. He was found to be a danger to himself and/or others. He was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 12-02-12, at 1:55 AM. JESTER DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication, Possession of Fictitious Driver License, Possession of Alcohol by a Minor, and Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT Student staggering down the sidewalk on the west side of Jester Center. The officer initiated a pedestrian stop. The student stated he had been drinking alcohol and that he had alcohol in his room. He and his roommate were under the legal drinking age of 21. The student’s eyes were bloodshot and he had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. The student consented to giving the officer the alcohol in his room. A Resident’s Assistant (RA) accompanied them to the room. Two large bottles of rum and vodka and approximately 10 cans of beer were given to the RA and were disposed of. The student had a fictitious New Jersey Driver License in his wallet along with his valid license. The officer issued the student a Field Release Citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The student refused to sign the citation because he stated he didn’t understand it. His roommate did not feel comfortable caring for him due to his intoxication level. The student was deemed a danger to himself and/or others. He was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. The Field Release Citation was voided. The student received verbal warnings for Possession of Fictitious Driver License, Possession of Alcohol by a Minor, and Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Both students were referred to the Dean of Students for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on 12-02-12, at 2:20 AM. BIKE RACK, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A UT Student reported his white and silver Schwinn Prelude road bike stolen; along with his cable lock and U Lock. He secured his bike to the bike rack, next to Jester West Dormitory, with a cable lock. His U lock was attached to the bike; not securing the bike to the rack. Both locks were missing as well. Loss Value: $220.00. Occurred on 12-03-12, between 10:10 AM and 2:00 PM. BIKE RACK, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A UT Student reported his gray and white Gary Fisher Joo Koo Ekoo bike stolen. He secured his bike to the bike rack, on the south side of San Jacinto Dormitory, with a cable lock. Loss Value: $110.00. Occurred on 12-03-12, between 2:00 AM and 1:00 PM. BIKE RACK, 2500 Whitis Avenue Theft, Unlawful Use of Criminal Instrument, and Criminal Trespass: UT Police Department received notice of a stolen gray bike from a bike rack in the 2500 block of Whitis Avenue. The bike and the Non-UT Subject claiming the bike was his were found on a Capital Metro Bus. He had various tools in his backpack used to cut bike locks. He was taken into custody for Theft, Unlawful Use of Criminal Instrument, and Criminal Trespass. He was transported to Central Booking. Recovered Value: $1,000.00. Occurred on 12-03-12, at 8:18 PM. 2400 Block San Jacinto Boulevard Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a red BMW sedan traveling 33 MPH in a posted 15 MPH zone. The officer initiated a traffic stop. The Non-UT Driver was confused, she fumbled in her wallet for her license, and her speech was thick tongued. The driver was asked to exit her vehicle. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person. The driver had remnants of her last meal on her dress and in the seat of her vehicle. She consented to performing the standardized field sobriety tests. It was determined that the driver was intoxicated to the point that she could not safely operate a motor vehicle. She was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 12-04-12, at 2:00 AM. Jailed Grinch: 2 The University of Texas Police Department responded to 94 Alarm Calls, 3 Assisting Outside Agency Reports, 3 Criminal Trespass Warning Reports, 1 Unauthorized Solicitation Report, 5 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 12 Unsecured Door Reports, 3 Sick/Ill Person Calls, 4 Welfare Concern Reports, 2 Lost and Found Property Reports, and 4 Key Assist Calls between 11/30/12 and 12/04/12. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
