Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 01/10/13 and Monday, 01/14/13. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed yelling at adults and children attending an event. The responding officers located the subject as he was using a well placed wall to help maintain his balance. The subject continued to yell incoherent phases at the officers and staff members. Officers were able to locate a sober friend to release the subject to after being ejected from the event. Occurred on: 1-11-13 at 8:55 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A white Apple iPhone was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured inside a purse. During the investigation, the officers learned the purse had been left inside a women’s restroom for about five minutes. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 1-13-13, between 3:15 PM and 3:20 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A UT student discovered his black Apple iPhone had been stolen while he was playing basketball. During the investigation, the officers learned the cell phone had been left unattended on the bleachers. The victim saw an unknown subject around his property. The subject was described as a white male wearing a red t-shirt. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 1-12-13 between 8:00 PM and 8:20 PM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student discovered three bottles of prescription medication had been taken from her 6th floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim’s roommate had allowed two non-UT subjects to spend the weekend. One subject had asked the victim about her medication and wanted to sample it. A couple of days later the medication was discovered missing. Loss value: Unknown. Occurred between: 1-11-13 and 1-13-13. MOORE-HILL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Theft: An orange colored Triaz mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the dormitory after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $120.00. Occurred between: 12-17-12 and 1-13-13. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 Block North IH-35 Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered an unknown subject had pried open the access panel leading into the Baseball bill board sign. Estimated damage: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 1-12-13. 200 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer observed a known offender attempt to gain entry into a restricted area. During the investigation, the subject informed the officer he needed to drop off a letter to an unknown staff member for a study. The officer confirmed the subject had received a number of prior Criminal Trespass Warnings for a number of buildings on campus. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-13-13, at 4:51 PM. 1800 BLOCK BRAZOS Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a tan Hyundai traveling south without its headlamps turned on. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the non-UT driver’s breath. The driver informed the officer she had consumed a glass of wine several hours prior to the traffic stop. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-14-13 at 12:44 AM. 2100 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed two UT students carrying a very intoxicated third student. The officers learned the students had been attending a party at a fraternity house. The intoxicated student had a very strong odor of alcohol on his breath and kept falling asleep. Austin EMS treated the student at the scene and transported him to a local area hospital for additional treatment. The officers learned all three students were under the legal age of 21, however only the intoxicated student had been drinking. Occurred on: 1-13-13, at 12:38 AM. 2100 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Failure to Identify: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject attempting to carry another intoxicated subject through campus. The intoxicated subject was heard yelling to be let down, and was seen pulling on her friend’s skirt. During the investigation, the officers attempted to identify the intoxicated subject. The subject provided the officers with a false name as well as a false date of birth before the officers were able to positively identify her. The subject was taken into custody for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and Failure to Identify and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-11-13 at 11:16 PM. 4200 BLOCK NORTH IH-35 Driving While Intoxicated-Open Container: A UT Police Officer observed the driver of a red Chevy attempting to drive in multiple lanes at the same time. The officer witnessed the driver miss hitting a guard rail before stopping. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. When asked for his driver’s license, the driver handed the officer a business card. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-13-13, at 3:30 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 35 Alarm reports, 2 Suspicious Activity report, 3 Suspicious Person Reports, and 3 Burned Out Light reports between 1/11/13 and 1/14/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
