Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 01/18/13 and Tuesday, 01/22/13. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Theft: A black leather purse containing several credit cards, personal identification, $30.00 in cash, and a cellular telephone was stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the purse had been placed inside a suite with limited access. The purse had been place on a coat rack located in the back of the suite and left unattended. Loss value: $330.00. Occurred on: 1-19-13, between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported an intoxicated student inside the lobby could not stand on her own. The student had several friends helping to hold her up. During the investigation, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student’s roommate informed the officers she was willing to take care of student until she sobered up. The intoxicated student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released to her sober roommate. Occurred on: 1-19-13, at 3:20 AM. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping inside a restricted area. During the investigation, the officers discovered the subject had been issued a prior written Criminal Trespass Warning. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-19-13, at 12:21 AM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Graffiti: Words written in black marker were discovered inside a first floor men’s restroom. Estimated Damage: $25.00. Discovered on: 1-19-13 at 1:41 AM. 1600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Theft / Assist Outside Agency: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT suspect had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the north side of the UTA building. During the investigation, the officers located the mountain bicycle as well as the suspect. The suspect denied any knowledge of the bicycle or the black bag containing a pair of bolt cutters. The subject was taken into custody for the Theft. As the investigation continued, the officers soon learned the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-18-13, at 10:50 AM. 2100 BLOCK GUADALUPE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student supporting another UT student from falling while experiencing an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. During the investigation, the officers learned the students were dating and one student was under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released to her sober boyfriend. Occurred on: 1-20-13, at 1:15 AM. 2100 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Theft: A UT staff member reported a 50 foot fire hose was stolen after being left unattended next to a fire hydrant. During the investigation, the officers searched the area with negative results. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 1-20-13, between 10:45 PM and 11:52 PM. 2200 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered a golf cart owned by O’s Café parked on the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officers discovered the vehicle had been tampered with. Estimated damage: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 1-20-13, at 2:25 AM. 2300 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Terroristic Threat / Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject approached a UT student and began ranting and became very angry towards the student. The subject made several threats towards the student causing the student to be fearful. During the investigation, the responding officers searched the area and were able to locate the suspect several blocks away. The subject was taken into custody for Terroristic Threat and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 1-19-13, at 8:50 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 91 Alarm reports, 8 Suspicious Activity reports, 2 Suspicious Person reports, 7 Burned Out Light reports between 1/18/13 and 1/22/13. Items with a serial number such as laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, electronics, and bikes are eligible. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
