Occurred on: 1-24-13, between 12:15 PM and 12:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Distraction and slight of hand, two tricks a magician employs to OOH and AHH the audience. Distraction and slight of hand tricks are also used by a criminal. It is not unusual for a group of criminals to work together to distract you while another will take your property. Always keep your property secure. 2100 BLOCK GUADALUPE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student urinating on a wall. When stopped, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath. The student informed the officers he had been drinking with at a local downtown establishment with several friends. The officers soon discovered the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued him a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Prior to signing the citation, the student wanted to contact his attorney first. The student contacted his mother, then signed the citation and was released. Occurred on: 1-25-13, at 1:49 AM. 2500 BLOCK UNIVERSITY AVE Theft: A green Londoner road bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located near Burdine Hall. During the investigation, the officer learned the bicycle had been secured to the bike rack with a U-shaped lock. The lock was securing the handlebars to the rack. Loss value: $110.00. Occurred on: 1-24-13, betteen 9:20 AM and 1:50 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Criminals are always looking for an opportunity. Not securing our property properly provides that opportunity. Any part of a bicycle that can been removed by simply turning a screw or loosening a “quick release” bolt does not provide an ideal spot for your lock. Look at your bike for a minute, is there a part of the frame that has been welded together. If so that is the spot you want to use as your primary contact point for your lock. Now look at your locks. Are you using a two-lock locking system? Your primary lock is a U-shaped lock that secures the bike to the bike rack. The second lock is a self-locking cable lock. This is a secondary locking device employed to lock the rear tire. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 20 Alarm reports, 2 Suspicious Activity reports, 2 Burned Out Light reports between 1/24/13 and 1/25/13.
