Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 01/25/13 and Tuesday, 01/29/13. AT&T CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Ave Theft / Criminal Mischief / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member heard a tapping sound coming from the east lobby. The staff member observed a UT student attempting to leave the lobby with a painting under his arm. The staff member chased the student and caught him along with another student. During the investigation, the officers noted the picture frame had been damaged and the manager declined to file charges for theft. The students were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings and were referred to the Dean of Student’s Office. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 1-27-13, at 3:40 AM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered the west control arm had been bent and forced upward. During the investigation, the officer watched the security video for the area. The officers observed a white Kia pull up to the exit. The passenger exited the vehicle and forced the control arm up, damaging it in the process. The vehicle then drove off. Estimated damage, $200.00. Occurred on: 1-27-13, at 4:18 AM. COMMUNICATIONS BUILDING B, 2504-B Whitis Ave Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer discovered a known offender inside a restricted area of the building. The subject was sitting in a chair behind a locked door. The officer determined the subject had received a prior Criminal Trespass Warning for the area and took the subject into custody for Criminal Trespass. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-25-13, at 7:54 PM. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, 100 East 21st Street Burglary of Building: A black Dell Optiplex desk top computer was reported stolen from a secured second floor office. Loss value: $700.00. Occurred between 1-11-13 and 1-23-13. KINSOLVNG DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Suspicious Person: A UT student awoke to discover she was no longer alone inside her bed. She discovered a male subject had entered her room and was now cuddling with her. The student screamed and the male subject bolted out of the bed and ran. During the investigation, the officers searched the area and discovered the male subject had entered the room from the adjoining room, where he was discovered. The male subject was identified as a UT student and he stated he was spending the night with a friend. The student was escorted from the building. Occurred on: 1-26-13, at 5:22 AM. PARKING LOT 41, 2200 Block Red River Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered an unknown person had removed the starter from her vehicle. Loss value: $110.00. Occurred between 1-24-13 and 1-25-13. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Graffiti: A UT Police Officer discovered words written in different colors of spray paint in four separate areas of the garage. Estimated repair: $250.00. Discovered on: 1-26-13, at 7:48 AM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported a highly intoxicated UT student inside the lobby. During the investigation, the officers discovered two intoxicated students inside the lobby area. The officers did not have a hard time detecting the odor of alcohol on the student’s breaths, it was very apparent. The officers soon learned the students were under the legal age of 21but were not intoxicated to a level they presented a danger to themselves or to others. Both were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 1-26-13, at 1:06 AM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member reported a known offender was inside the building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and recognized him as a known thief. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass after officers confirmed the subject had received a prior Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 1-25-13, at 6:39 PM. 100 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Theft: A black and grey Hyper bicycle was reported stolen after being secured to the chain railing located on the north side of Painter Hall with a self-locking cable lock. During the investigation, the officer learned the cable securing the bicycle had been cut. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between: 1-25-13, and 1-28-13. 1800 BLOCK COMAL Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed the driver of a silver Pontiac commit several traffic violations while traveling through campus. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the non-UT driver’s breath. The driver informed the officer she was coming from a downtown location where she had consumed two Red Bulls with vodka. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and the driver displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-26-13, at 3:35 AM. 2400 BLOCK GUADALUPE Assault by Contact: A UT student reported being assaulted when an unknown subject threw a water balloon at him. After throwing the water balloon, the suspect drove away. Occurred on: 1-26-13, at 11:00 PM. 2500 BLOCK UNIVERSITY AVE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of More than One Valid DL / Failure to ID: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student laying under a bus stop bench. The student was still wearing (as well as laying in) the evidence that he had experienced an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The student informed the officers he had been drinking with several of his fellow Zeta Psi fraternity pledges. The student handed the officers a Texas ID card that was later determined to be issued to another person. Austin EMS arrived and treated the subject at the scene. EMS discovered the student was using a fake ID card, while looking for his TX license, discovered the student was in possession of a flask containing alcohol. The student was transported to a local area hospital for additional treatment. The officer will have a summons issued to the student for the criminal charges, along with a referral to the Dean of Student’s Office. Occurred on: 1-26-13, at 3:00 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 65 Alarm reports, 4 Suspicious Activity reports, 1 Suspicious Person Report, 2 Burned Out Light reports between 1/25/13 and 1/29/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
