Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 02/01/13 and Monday, 02/04/13. ART BUILDING, 2301 San Jacinto Blvd. Possession of Marijuana / Tampering with Evidence / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student and a non-UT subject passed out inside a 1st floor classroom. The officer observed a glass water pipe sitting on a desk next to one. Both subjects sat up and one subject faked a sneeze and destroyed a small pile of marijuana sitting next to the “bong.” The subject was taken into custody for Possession of Marijuana / Tampering with Evidence / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 2-01-13, at 6:25 AM. INTRAMURAL FIELD, 4901 Guadalupe Criminal Mischief: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had broken the right rear window of her Scion. The student did not notice any personal property missing from her vehicle. Estimated repair: $250.00. Discovered on: 2-02-13, at 11:58 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A red leather bi-fold wallet containing personal identification, several credit and debit cards was reported stolen after being left unattended. During the investigation, the officer learned the wallet had been left next to a computer located on the first floor while the victim was standing several feet away. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 2-02-13, at 12:05 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was discovered staggering along using a retaining wall to maintain her balance. During the investigation she informed the officers she was coming from a downtown location and was very intoxicated. The officers were able to locate a friend the student had been walking with. The officers learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued her court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 2-03-13, at 2:24 AM. 200 EAST 24th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered a student staggering back and forth as he attempted to make his way along a straight sidewalk. The subject staggered then fell into the street. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student informed the officers he had been consuming alcohol at a downtown location and was currently walking home. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-02-13, at 1:40 AM. 600 BLOCK COLORADO Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out behind the OHH building. After several attempts the subject began to respond to the officer’s commands. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject did not know his name, where he was or where he intended to go. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-04-13, at 1:36 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a vehicle travelling through campus at a high rate of speed. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the non-UT driver’s breath. The driver informed the officer he had consumed two beers over the course of two hours. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-03-13, at 3:35 AM. 2100 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Public Intoxication / Fictitious License: A UT Police Officer observed a UT student staggering and stumbling as he attempted to walk. The student stumbled across the street and was able to use a rock retaining wall to help maintain his balance. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned the student was under the legal age of 21. The student presented the officers with an ID card but was not able to verify any of the information on it. Due to the student level of intoxication, he was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. The officers later learned the ID card presented to them was counterfeit. The student was charged with Public Intoxication / Fictitious License and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-02-13, at 1:50 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 52 Alarm reports, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 2 Medical Calls between 2/01/13 and 2/04/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
