Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 02/08/13 and Monday, 02/11/13. ART BUILDING, 2301 San Jacinto Blvd. Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member heard a UT student breaking windows and damaging property on the 4th floor of the building. The staff member locked himself into a closet and contacted the UT Police Department. Responding officers located the student on the 3rd floor as he was exiting a classroom carrying a metal railing. The student was taken into custody for Criminal Mischief after being positively identified by the staff member. Estimated damage: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 2-11-13, at 3:25 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Marijuana / Public Intoxication: A UT staff member observed a non-UT staggering in the middle of the street while swinging a towel. During the investigation, the officers noted the subject appeared to be intoxicated, but the officers did not detect any alcohol. Officers soon discovered the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and the two warrants. As the subject was being taken into custody, a small plastic baggie fell from the subject’s front pocket. The baggie contained a small amount of marijuana. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-09-13, at 2:26 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported a naked male entered the 6th floor bathroom and wrapped the victim’s towel around himself then attempted to leave the area. The victim yelled at the subject to return his towel, which he did. When the victim finished showering, he discovered his keys, shorts, and tee-shirt had been stolen. A second student discovered his clothes and key to his room had also been stolen. The unknown subject was described as: Hispanic male, 5’-06”, short black hair, thin build, and clean shaven. No clothing description was available. Loss value: $16.00. Occurred on: 2-09-13, at 3:25 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was discovered laying face down in a pool vomit. The officer learned the student had been to several locations in the downtown area and had returned to campus via a taxi. The student did not remember how she made it to the 8th floor. During the investigation, the officer learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and was exhibiting several signs of intoxication. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released to a sober friend. Occurred on: 2-10-13, at 2:15 AM. ROBERT A WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject entered a 1st floor classroom wanting to take a test with only 5 minutes left. When denied his request, the subject stated he could finish the test in the allotted time. Again he was denied and asked to leave. The subject left, but walked through a glass door. A staff member heard the sound breaking glass. Estimated repair: $500.00. Occurred on: 2-08-13, at 3:43 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed going back and forth towards the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers located the subject inside a restricted area. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-10-13, at 7:39 PM. 2100 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: The UT Police Department received information a UT student was leaning over the bushes and providing alcohol enriched compost. During the investigation, the officers located the student, passed out behind the bushes. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath along with the wafting odor of vomit. The officers learned the student had consumed 7 beers at a private party and his roommate was attempting to get him home. The officers noted the student would not stay awake and was having a difficult time communicating. Austin EMS transported him to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 2-10-13, at 1:19 AM. 1900 BLOCK GUADALUPE Theft: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike rack. During the investigation, the officers located the subject as well as the bicycle several blocks away. The subject was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-09-13, at 7:52 AM. Recovered value: $1,350.00. 1800 BLOCK RED RIVER Theft: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the east side of CDL. During the investigation, the officers were able to locate the bike and the suspect several miles away. The suspect was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-10-13, at 1:11 AM. Recovered value: $1,350.00. 1600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Theft: The University of Texas Police Department received information a non-UT subject was removing a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the north side of the UTA Building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject as well as the bicycle 10 blocks from the site of the theft. The subject was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-10-13, at 8:36 PM. Recovered value: $1,350.00. 1600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Theft: The University of Texas Police Department received information a non-UT subject was removing a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the north side of the UTA Building. During the investigation, the officers located the bicycle and the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-09-13, at 11:10 AM. Recovered value: $1,350.00. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 58 Alarm reports, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports , 2 Suspicious Person reports, 1 Suspicious Person Report, 2 Fire Alarms, 3 Medical Calls between 2/08/13 and 2/11/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
