Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 02/15/13 and Monday, 02/18/13. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: Officers responded to a report of a UT student waking up and finding another UT student inside his room macerating on his bed and floor. During the investigation, the officers learned the student left and went back to his room. Officers located the student and learned he had consumed a large amount of alcohol from an unknown location. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The victim declined to file charges on Criminal Mischief, he simply wanted a dry place to sleep and the suspect to clean up his mess. Occurred on: 2-16-13, at 5:57 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: The tip of the day can be broken down into two works, Door Lock. Three if we were to state, “Lock your door.” JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping inside the lobby. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong of alcohol on the subject’s breath and learned he was under the legal age of 21. The subject informed the officers he had just arrived into town and was waiting for a friend. The subject was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-16-13, at 3:11 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject sleeping inside a restricted area on the 3rd floor. During the investigation, the officers discovered the subject had received a prior written Criminal Trespass warning. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-17-13, at 11:58 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana: Officers responded to a report of burning marijuana coming from a 14th floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers confirmed the odor and discovered two UT students inside the room. Both students admitted they had been smoking marijuana prior to the arrival of the officers. During a search, officers located two baggies containing a small amount of marijuana. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Marijuana. Occurred on: 2-16-13, at 10:12 PM. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Theft: A silver Apple iPad was reported stolen from a secured 7th floor classroom cabinet. During the investigation, the officer learned the iPad was taken sometime over a 5 day period. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred between: 2-11-13 and 2-15-13. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1900 Red River Theft: A UT student discovered her backpack containing an Apple laptop computer and make-up was stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the backpack had been removed from a secured locker and placed on a floor by the student. Upon her return she discovered her property had been taken. Loss value: $1,500.00. Occurred on: 2-14-13, between 8:00 PM and 8:30 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD. Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer discovered a UT student walking in a zig-zag pattern as he crossed the street. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned he was coming from the downtown area. The student informed the officer he had attempted to rescue his friend that had been arrested for Public Intoxication. The officer discovered the student was under the legal age of 21. While being issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor, the student did not feel he should have been stopped. Occurred on: 2-17-13, at 2:00 AM. 700 BLOCK COLORADO Public Intoxication: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject attempting to gain entry into the lower level of the CLB parking garage. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The non-UT subject was confused as to his location and informed the officers he was trying to get back to his hotel. The subject was released to a sober friend. Occurred on: 2-17-13, at 4:43 AM. 2100 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Assault: A non-UT subject witnessed a suspect sit next to a non-UT female and begin touching her leg inappropriately. The victim told the non-UT suspect to stop, but he continued. The witness confronted the suspect and an argument ensued. During the investigation, the officers learned the suspect had consumed a Four Loco and was having anxiety. The victim did not wish to file charges and the suspect was released. Occurred on: 2-17-13, at 7:46 AM. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving While Intoxicated: UT Police Officers observed a white Scion fail to stop at a controlled intersection and travel through campus at a high rate of speed. During the traffic investigation, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the non-UT driver’s breath. The driver stated she was coming from an office party at a local downtown establishment. She informed the officers that she had consumed 4 shots. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and the driver displayed a number of clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-16-13, at 2:48 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 81 Alarm reports, 4 Suspicious Activity Report, 1 Suspicious Person report, 2 Medical Calls, 2 Burned Out Light Reports, and 4 Unsecured Door Repots between 2/15/13 and 2/18/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
