Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 02/22/13 and Monday, 02/25/13. GATEWAY APARTMENTS, 1616 West 6th Street Harassment: A UT student reported receiving a number of harassing text messages, telephone calls and emails from her ex-roommate after having him evicted from the apartment. Reported on: 2-22-13, at 11:50 PM. GUADAULPE PARKING GARAGE, 1616 Guadalupe Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had removed his battery from his vehicle. During the investigation, the officer learned the staff member had parked his vehicle on the 1st level, but had left his passenger window down slightly. The passenger window was forced down and access into the vehicle was gained. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between: 2-24-13, at 4:30 PM and 2-15-13, at 12:30 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: UT Police Officers responded to a first floor restroom on a report of an intoxicated UT student passed out inside one of the stalls. Upon arrival the officers discovered the student was experiencing the ill effects of paying homage to Dionysus. Austin EMS treated the student at the scene and transported her to a local area hospital. Occurred on: 2-24-13, at 3:42 AM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Theft: A UT staff member discovered an Epson TM-P90 printer had been stolen after an inventory of the property had been completed. The printer was last accounted for in June 2012. Loss value: $480.00. Reported on: 2-22-13, at 11:51 AM. PETER T. FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, 2304 Whitis Ave Graffiti: A UT Police Officer discovered words written in black ink inside a 2nd floor men’s restroom. Estimated repair: $50.00. Discovered on: 2-24-13, at 4:5 PM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Criminal Trespass / Possession of Marijuana: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject inside a restricted area. The subject refused to leave after being asked to leave several times. During the investigation, the officers located subject and learned he had received a prior written Criminal Trespass Warning in addition to the verbal warning. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. During a search of the subject, the officer discovered a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance that the officer recognized as marijuana. The officer made a second discovery a pill bottle contained three hand rolled marijuana cigarettes. Additional charges for Possession of Marijuana were filed. Occurred on: 2-23-13, at 8:00 PM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Ave Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: The UT Police Department received information from the Austin Police Department of a disturbance near the Union Building. During the investigation, the officers learned a subject was attempting to take care of his intoxicated girlfriend, a UT Student. The student informed the officers she had consumed too much alcohol and could not remember where she lived or her phone number. The officers learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released to her sober boyfriend. Occurred on: 02-23-13, at 2:00 AM. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject using a well placed planter box to lean on. However, the subject could not maintain his balance and fell into the planter. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and learned the subject had been with several friends while drinking. The officer attempted to locate a sober friend to no avail. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-23-13, at 2:50 AM. 1500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Wrong Way on a Posted One-Way / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a black SUV traveling the wrong way on a posted One-Way street. During the traffic investigation, the non-UT driver stated he was not familiar with the roads in Austin and was up from Houston to attend a party at the Fiji House. The officer learned the driver, as well as the passengers, were all under the legal age of 21. The driver was quick to inform the officer that he was the designated driver and he and his friends were all still in high school. The driver and the passengers were removed from the vehicle. The officers detected the odor of alcohol on the breaths of both passengers. Each passenger was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The officers did not detect any odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. Occurred on: 2-23-13, at 3:29 AM. 2100 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Suspicious Person: A UT student reported being approached by an unknown subject asking for directions to Jester Dormitory. The subject then followed up with a question asking the student what her plans were later. The student left and contacted the UT Police Department. Officers searched the areas with negative results. The unknown subject was described as: white male, 5’-10” with a scar over his right eye. Last seen wearing a pink shirt and dark colored pants. Occurred on: 2-23-13, at 9:18 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT female was hanging onto a male UT student so she could walk. During the investigation the officers learned both subjects had just met at a party and the male subject was attempting to help the female get to a dorm to meet a friend. The non-UT subject did not know where she was, nor did she know of anyone to call. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-23-13, at 1:35 AM. 2700 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed black SUV traveling the wrong way on a posted One-Way street. During the traffic investigation, the officer observed an open can of beer sitting in the center console. The driver stated he was unaware the beer was even there. Upon closer inspection, the officer observed an open 18 pack of beer in the back passenger compartment. Again the driver stated he did not know it was there. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver did not display enough clues to indicate he was legally intoxication to himself or to others. However, the officer learned the driver was under the legal age of 21 and was issued a court appearance citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor. The vehicle was impounded and inventoried. During the inventory, the officer discovered a baggie containing marijuana. Occurred on: 2-23-13, at 1:30 AM. 2800 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a Jeep commit several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The officer noted the driver’s eyes were blood shot and watery and asked the driver if he had drank any alcohol, the driver admitted to having consumed five beers. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-24-13, at 2:20 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 60 Alarm reports, 5 Suspicious Activity Report, 5 Suspicious Person reports, 2 Medical Calls, 2 Burned Out Light Reports, and 7 Unsecured Door Reports between 2/22/13 and 2/25/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
