Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 03/01/13 and Monday, 03/04/13. BLANTON DORMITORY, 2500 University Ave Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: Officers responded to a report of a UT student passed out inside a 5th floor restroom. Officers discovered the student and were able to wake him up. The student stated he had been to several downtown bars and had consumed adult beverages. The officer learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued him a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 3-02-13, at 3:02 AM. BRACKENRIDGE DORMIROTY, 207 East 21st Street Public Intoxication / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: Officers responded to a report of two male subjects passed out in the stairwell. The responding officers discovered two students covered in fecal material from head to toe. During the investigation, the officers noted neither student comprehended the questions asked nor where they able to reply. Austin EMS treated the students at the scene and transported them to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Charges for Public Intoxication and Consumption of Alcohol were filed. Charges for Improper Disposal of Human Waste were not filed. Occurred on: 3-02-13, at 3:35 AM. GEARING HALL, 200 West 24th Street Theft: A black Nikon D3100 camera, along with two black plastic lens were reported stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the camera and lens had been left unattended and unsecured inside an auditorium during an event. Loss value: $201.00. Occurred on: 2-28-13. INTERMURAL FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Theft / Fraud: A UT student discovered a non-UT subject had removed his credit cards from his wallet while he was playing soccer. During the investigation, the officer learned the wallet had been placed inside a backpack and the backpack had been left unsecured and unattended on a bleacher. The following day, the student began receiving text alerts from his bank on purchases being made with this credit card. The card was cancelled and the student was able to obtain the name of the suspect who had been making this purchases. Charges for Fraud were filed. Occurred on: 2-21-13, at 7:00 PM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: UT Police Officers responded to a report of an intoxicated UT student in the lobby area. Prior to the arrival of the officers, the student left the lobby for the 9th floor. Officers located the student and confirmed the student was intoxicated, but a sober friend was taking care of her. The student was issued a court appearance citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor when the officers learned the student was under the legal age of 21. Occurred on: 3-0-3-13, at 2:35 AM. 1600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Theft / Failure to Identify / Assist Outside Agency: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a bicycle from the bike racks located on the north side of the building. During the investigation the officer located the subject several blocks away riding the bicycle. The subject was stopped. The subject informed the officers he had been in possession of the bicycle for over two years, even though it had been less than 10 minutes since the bicycle was reported stolen. As the investigation continued, the officers soon learned the subject had provided them a false name. The subject was taken into custody for Theft and Failure to Identify. Once in custody the officers were able to positively identify the subject and learned he had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for parole violation. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Recovered value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 3-02-13, at 12:23 AM. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a white Honda traveling at a high rate of speed through campus. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol the breath of the driver. The driver informed the officer he had consumed three beers and was on his way to drop off a friend. The officer learned the student was under the legal age of 21 and issued him a court appearance citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 3-03-13, at 2:10 AM. 2400 BLOCK TRINITY Theft: A non-UT subject reported his son’s Apple iPod and Beatz headphones stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned both items had been placed inside a bag. The bag had been placed on the ground behind a wall, while the victim had relaxed drinking a soda. The victim searched the area and discovered the bag across the street behind another building. Loss value: $450.00. Occurred on: 3-02-13, at 4:11 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 68 Alarm reports, 4 Suspicious Activity Reports, 5 Suspicious Person reports, 1Burned Out Light Report, and 2 Unsecured Door Reports between 3/01/13 and 3/04/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
