Report for 03/07/2013

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 03/06/13 and Thursday, 03/07/13. The Austin Police Department has asked the following information be passed along to you. "The property crime rate near Crossing Pl. and E. Riverside has spiked in recent weeks due to burglaries of residences and vehicles. Many burglaries involve cases where citizens have left their car or apartment doors unlocked. By remembering to hide your things, lock your doors, and take your keys, citizens can drastically reduce the chance of becoming the next burglary victim. The Austin Police Department reminds you to please report any suspicious or unusual activity. It is a simple phone call to “311.” Don't make it easy for burglars. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 510 East 23rd Street Theft: A UT staff member observed a UT student carrying two cases of beer around inside the PAC. When stopped the student would not give the staff member a straight forward answer as to why he was carrying two cases of beer. The staff member escorted the student out of the building, only to discover the student had returned a short time later, minus the beer. The staff member learned two cases of beer were missing from a cooler located on the 6th floor and contacted the UT Police Department. The UT Police officers located the subject and learned the subject had in fact removed both cases of beer prior to being escorted out of the building, with the beer. The subject had stashed the beer a short distance away and returned to the PAC to see the event. The officers and the student walked to the area he had hidden the beer, only to discover one of the cases of beer was missing. The student made restitution for the beer, but declined to file a theft report on the missing beer he had stolen. No charges were filed. Occurred on: 3-6-13, at 8:02 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Brought to you today by the letter K…Karma. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Theft: A UT staff member reported yellow bicycle stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the dormitory. During the investigation, the officer learned the bicycle had been secured to the bike rack with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $205.00. Occurred on: 3-6-13, between 4:15 PM and 8:20 PM. 300 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Harassment of a Public Servant / Public Intoxication: Officers responded to the bus stop on a report of a subject creating a disturbance and refusing to exit the bus. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and discovered he was wearing the evidence of having had an extreme physical reaction to the over-consumption of alcohol. The non-UT subject was disoriented and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The officers learned the subject was on the wrong bus and had refused to leave. The subject refused to comply with the officers and began resisting them as he was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. As he was being placed inside a marked patrol vehicle, the subject began spitting into the face of the arresting officer. Additional charges for Harassment of a Public Servant were filed. Occurred on: 3-06-13, 11:09 PM.
