Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 03/15/13 and Monday, 03/18/13. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 Red River Theft: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from a bike rack located on the north side of the park. During the investigation, the officers located the subject several blocks away still in possession of the bicycle. The subject was stopped and taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Recovered value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 3-16-13, at 1:23 AM. COLORADO APARTMENTS, 2501 Lake Austin Blvd. Suspicious Activity: A UT student reported an unknown subject had attempted to gain entrance into his apartment. During the investigation, the officer learned the student heard the sound of an object being placed into the lock. The student flicked his lights on and off and the subject ran away. Occurred on: 3-17-13, at 11:47 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Public Intoxication / Evading Arrest / Failure to Identify: A non-UT subject entered into restricted areas during an event and claimed to be employee. During the investigation, the subject changed employers twice during his conversation with the police officer. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject not only changed employers, but changed his name. When called on his name change, the subject insisted he was leaving the area. A short jaunt ensued and the subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication / Evading Arrest / Failure to Identify and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 3-17-13, at 9:10 PM. MOORE-HILL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported not receiving a package sent to her from her parent. During the investigation, the officer learned the package contained an iTune card and other treats from home. Loss value: $15.00. Discovered on: 3-15-13, at 10:47 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Theft: A red Moto Becane mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of SJH after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $515.00. Occurred between: 3-09-13, and 3-17-13. 4900 BLOCK GUADALUPE Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered the rear passenger side window of her Mazda shattered and noted someone had moved her property around inside her vehicle. The student inventoried her vehicle and discovered a Ralph Lauren tote bag had been removed from the trunk. The tote contained a US lacrosse umpire book as well as the rule book for US lacrosse. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 3-17-13, between 4:45 PM and 6:10 PM. 4900 BLOCK GUADALUPE Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered the rear passenger side window of her Nissan smashed. The student discovered her Louis Vuitton purse had been stolen. The officer learned the purse had been left on the floor board of the vehicle. Loss value: $700.00. Occurred on: 3-16-13, between 12:45 PM and 3:35 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 62 Alarm Reports, 5 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 4 Welfare Concerns, 4 Burned Out Light Reports, and 2 Unsecured Door Reports between 3/15/13 and 3/18/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
